Jnane Tamsna Hotel Marrakech: A Review of Paradise

Welcome to Marrakech, where the first thing you learn is that strange fungal smells, unlit passages and unmarked doors are the city’s prelude to its most wonderful places, of which Jnane Tamsna is one. Nestled in the heart of the La Palmarie district of Marrakech, this boutique destination is so much more than a hotel - it’s a welcoming retreat for those who, like me, are continually enraptured by its magic. Formerly one of Morocco’s four imperial capitals, Marrakech remains a significant cultural and political center in North Africa. This magic has been created by Meryanne Loum-Martin and Gary Martin who, over the last 20 years, have designed and made the hotel and its grounds an absolute paradise.

Location and Setting

The big picture first: this hotel is not set in the old town; it’s a 20-minute drive northwest, in an area called La Palmeraie, notable for its numerous, government-protected palm-trees and some seriously large private houses. Being ‘out of it’ in this case proved a blessing; the hotel offers an escape from the overwhelming humanity of the souks and alleys in which you are likely to spend the majority of your time getting lost. Jnane Tamsna is set on a nine-acre garden outside Marrakech in the Palmeraie area, about 20 minutes from the city center. Where Marrakech is often a noisy and somewhat chaotic area, Jnane Tamsna is a place of quiet and peacefulness.

The Essence of Jnane Tamsna

In the heart of the city’s Palmeraie district lies Morocco’s first Black-owned hotel, opened in 2001 by lawyer-turned-designer and author of Inside Marrakesh: Enchanting Homes and Gardens, Meryanne Loum-Martin. The name, "Jnane," translates to "garden of paradise" in Arabic, while "Tamsna" refers to the nearby village. Opening in 2001, Jnane Tamsna was founded by what only can be described as the ultimate power couple, Meryanne Loum-Martin and Dr. Gary Martin. Meryanne is a Parisian lawyer turned hotelier who is also a world renowned designer, and her design eye is present everywhere throughout the property. Dr. Gary Martin has an equally impressive CV as a cultural anthropologist and ethnobotanist, former University lecturer, and founder of the Global Diversity Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports local communities along with agricultural, biological and cultural diversity.

It is hard to put into words what a special vibe has been cultivated at Jnane Tamsna. The rooms and the grounds are undoubtedly beautiful, and the community feeling among all the guests really sets the hotel apart. The hotel benefits from a wonderful sense of space and light. It’s an extremely photogenic location, and as you walk around it’s easy to imagine yourself posed artfully in some shot accompanying an article entitled ‘The Wonder of Marrakech’. Only this is the real thing, and you’re standing in it. The gentle sound of running fountains and arabesque tiling seduce the ear and eye, and contribute enormously to the sense of calm. And these pockets of charm aren’t just add-ons, but areas you can really enjoy.

Rooms and Amenities

Surrounded by ten acres of lush gardens, the property offers 24 guest rooms spread across five houses, each featuring its own swimming pool. There are 5 classes of rooms, ranging from the “Small” room (which really aren’t very small!) to the beautiful Pavilion rooms, complete with their own living room, veranda, and pool. Each of the rooms in Jnane Tamsna is unique, and Meryanne has sourced furniture and art from all over Morocco and beyond. Moroccan craftsmanship shines through in the butterscotch-colored walls, elegant arches, and intricate tile work showcased throughout the property. Adding to its charm, Jnane Tamsna has an impressive collection of African art, antiques, and locally crafted furniture curated by Loum-Martin.

The rooms come in various sizes, including small, standard, large, garden, and pavilion, and feature a tranquil color palette with pops of color, dark wood furnishings, fireplaces, and terraces. I was staying in the Jaipur room, which features red, pink and orange walls, as well as a huge bathroom complete with golden sinks and hanging lamps. The layout of Jnane Tamsna was unlike any hotel I’ve stayed at. Each of the 5 houses is separate from the others and down their own winding path through the gardens. There are also 5 swimming pools throughout the property, so you can always find space to relax either with other guests or a private corner all to yourself. Everyone has their meals in the common area by the main pool, and these meals quickly turned into a group social with guests sharing tables and stories into the evening. Jnane Tamsna does an amazing job of cultivating this friendly community vibe, which explains why they have become one of the premier boutique destinations for weddings, events, and retreats!

The hotel has five pools which can be enjoyed throughout the day by all guests, and this includes two heated pools - a particularly inviting prospect during the slightly cooler January mornings, before the sun makes itself at home in the midday sky. These pools are heated using clever energy-saving methods, capturing the heat from the air and transferring it directly to the water, which is then covered at night to maintain the optimal temperature. Jnane Tamsna provides guests with a variety of activities and experiences. On-site, guests can unwind by one of the serene pools, take a refreshing swim, or rejuvenate with a yoga or meditation class. For hands-on activities, guests can play tennis or immerse themselves in Moroccan cooking classes led by Chef Bahija. Children can enjoy activities and amenities like magic lessons, calligraphy classes, and the TV and games room. To explore the surrounding area, guests can do excursions by bike, sidecar, or camelback.

Amenities:

  • Restaurant
  • Five swimming pools
  • One tennis court
  • In-room spa treatments available
  • Bike rentals
  • In-room tea/coffee makers
  • Laundry service

The property hosts the most epic dinner parties, with beautiful candle-lit tables, mirrored accents, and twinkling glass lanterns hanging from the trees. These events are often accompanied by the melodies of local musicians.

Culinary Delights

Many places like to describe themselves as “organic” and “farm to table”, but Jnane Tamsna truly practices what they preach. Walk around the gardens and you will see vegetables being grown on site. They also have a nearby farm where they grow all their produce used in their daily meals. I can unequivocally say that the food I had at Jnane Tamsna was some of the best during my entire time in Morocco. Both lunch and dinner are served from set menus depending on what is freshest that day. Instead of purely Moroccan food, each dish has a modern Mediterranean twist, combining the amazing local flavors with inventive Western creations. As someone who was getting burnt out on living on couscous and tagine for almost a month in Morocco, these wonderful meals were a very welcome change!

One of the first places guests encounter upon entering is the library. The hotel’s exceptional culinary offerings are crafted from produce grown on-site. Breakfast presents a delightful spread that includes freshly made omelets, traditional Moroccan pancakes, refreshing juices, and seasonal fruits. For lunch and dinner, guests can enjoy Moroccan specialties such as chicken tagine, couscous, pastilla, Harira soup, and Gris wine (Vin Gris). Guests can dine in the communal dining room or opt for one of the many picturesque garden spots.

When it’s time for lunch, you can wander through the organic gardens and olive trees to enjoy a set menu, which is adjusted depending on the produce available in the hotel’s own vegetable patch. Expect delicious twists on the traditional Moroccan tagine, as well as melt-off-the-bone chicken dishes served with a variety of colourful vegetables. Food + Drink: Jnane Tamsna is recognized by the Michelin Guide, underscoring its high culinary standards. Under the vision of Loum-Martin’s husband, co-owner and ethnobotanist Dr. Gary J. Martin, the property employs a sustainable, farm-to-table approach.

Ethnobotanica Café and Shop

As the founder of the previously mentioned Global Diversity Fund, Gary knows a few things about giving back and supporting local communities. This is nowhere more evident than in the on site Ethnobotanica Café and Shop recently opened at Jnane Tamsna. Gary was nice enough to give us a private walk through and talk of the new shop, which sells goods to support local women and entrepreneurs. The shop had all sorts of amazing organic food, juices and other products, including locally produced saffron, argan oil, and some of the best figs I’ve ever had!

Service and Hospitality

In common with many of its taxis, service in Marrakech has only one gear, and a low one at that. Jnane Tamsna approaches this endemic problem in an unusual, possibly unconscious, surprisingly effective way. Their secret is to offer service only where they know they can provide it. For example, you won’t get annoyed here with room service turning up late or arriving with the wrong order, because there is no room service. And you won’t become irritated that reception takes an age to answer the phone, because there isn’t a phone in the room. It all makes for a stress-free stay: you help yourself to drinks in the evening, and laundry is free and on demand. And ours came back so quickly, we found ourselves checking it had been done properly. Most pleasant of all, though guests are told that breakfast is usually before 9.30, we, like all the other guests, usually turned up well after 10, only to be greeted by helpful smiles from the staff.

Surrounding Area

Any personal neighborhood recommendations? Because of the property’s secluded location, most off-site activities require a short drive. For a breathtaking adventure, opt for a sunrise hot air balloon ride or a quad biking tour. Several golf courses are located nearby, including PalmGolf Marrakech Palmeraie.

Final Thoughts

We spent a week melting into the somewhat softer embrace of Jnane Tamsna, and we left thinking that it’s probably what most people envisage when they imagine Marrakech: a boutique hotel with enough cultural distance from Europe to feed our need for exotica, but European enough to be manageable. There are hotels in North Africa where you’ll get a whitewashed, tourists-only experience, but Jnane Tamsna, in Marrakech’s Palmeraie, is not one of them. Jnane Tamsna is the perfect place for a boutique luxury stay or to host a special event.
