The Enigmatic Giant Finger Found in Egypt: Facts and Investigations

In April 1988, Gregor Spörri, a Swiss club owner, traveled to Egypt. He wanted to delve into the ancient Egyptian culture using books recommended by a friend. This journey would change his life forever.

During his trip, Spörri spent time in the Great Pyramid to find bio cosmic energy. He crawled through shafts, bribed overseers, and spent hours in sarcophagi, but without success.

On the second-last day of his holiday, a taxi picked him up early in the morning. The destination was the district Bir Hooker, near Sadat City, about 100 km northwest of Cairo. At a farm, Spörri met an elderly farmer named Nagib, a descendant of grave robbers. Nagib had inherited two wooden boxes full of valuables from his ancestors, which he sold to Western tourists. However, one item remained unsold for 150 years.

Nagib's Secret Legacy: The Unearthed Relic of Bir Hooker

Nagib proposed that Spörri could see, photograph, and hold this particular object for a fee of $300. Spörri sat on a wooden bench as Nagib pulled out a wooden box. He lifted the lid and took out an elongated packet wrapped in a leather cloth with lace around it. Underneath the leather cloth, old rags were wrapped around a strange looking object. When Nagib unwrapped the package, a gray-brown oblong object emerged.

He laid the object carefully in the hands of Spörri who examined the object with curiosity. Spörri was able to determine that what he was holding was old, organic and humanoid. The finger looked like it had been cut off with anatomical precision, and in some places was crumbled. The leathery skin was ripped in places and the skin was a few millimeters thick. Between the dried skinfolds he could see remains of fungus and the nail was loose. The surface of the skin was damaged in some places, as if mice had gnawed on it. The bone felt woody.

The finger measured 38.4 centimeters when stretched out. The middle finger of an adult is about eight to ten centimeters long. This Relic of Bir Hooker measured 35cm and was authenticated with 1960s x-rays.

His skepticism led Nagib to show him another item contained within the wooden box - a leather file folder containing a number of documents. Inside the folder was a certificate of authenticity, some papers with Arabic and Latin letters, a Polaroid photo of the finger and an X-ray made in the 60s. The farmer's son had some research done through a friend in the hospital of Cairo. When Spörri compared the finger to the x-ray he could see that the proportions and shape were correct and that the x-ray was of the finger he was holding.

Initial Analyses of the Giant Finger

The (chopped-off) bone protruding from the tissue at the base of the finger is remarkably thick-walled, comments Swiss mummy expert Frank J. Rühli on the photos of the relic. This indirectly confirms my assumption that this giant must have had an extremely massive body, as was and is common with other colossi: dinosaurs, elephants, whales, etc.

Just as interesting: the striking indentation on the underside of the bone also exists in human finger bones. It is astonishing that the giant finger has exactly the same anatomical proportions as a human finger. The “bottom” side of the object is flattened.

Where the finger was severed from the hand, the tissue is displaced to the side and upwards. This “bruising” indicates that the finger has been in contact with the skin for a longer period of time (possibly longer). over the period of his natural mummification (desiccation) on the same side. The finger was probably severed from the hand below the metacarpophalangeal joint with a machete or similar. First an all-round cut was made. Then the flesh was scraped off the bone with the blade. Finally, the bone was severed.

Both Professor Rühli and Dr. Benecke have considered a possible macrodactyly disorder in their image diagnosis .However, there are several reasons why Bir Hooker’s giant finger cannot be a macrodactyly :

  1. This disease is primarily characterized by pathological enlargement of the soft tissue.
  2. Bone growth is less affected. If it does, this usually manifests itself in a pathological enlargement of the corresponding bone parts (see x-rays).
  3. In the relict, the bone is anatomically correct and matches the proportions of the surrounding tissue mass.
  4. A bone as enlarged and thickened as the relic of Bir Hooker would not possibly fit on a human hand.
  5. Parts of the body affected by macrodactyly are not only enlarged but also abnormally deformed.

Due to water damage, only a poor copy of the photo of the X-ray image, on which the finger is shown in its original size, still exists. Dr. Nevertheless, Dr. Bader has Spörri write letters, which he sends to scientific colleagues together with the photos of the finger. However, there is no feedback or inquiries. Apparently this "paleontological madness", as Dr. At a further meeting in September 1995, Dr. Bader Spörri explained that scientists generally find it difficult to do things that do not conform because they always have to consider their reputation, career, prevailing doctrines, sponsors, etc.

The Swiss mummy expert Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Frank J. Rühli from the University of Zurich has already examined the glacier mummy "Ötzi" and the celebrity pharaoh "Tutankhamun". Rühli had the following to say about Bir Hooker's relic: "An exciting case. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make a definitive and well-founded assessment on the basis of the photos. However, the fingernail, its embedding in the tissue, the surface texture and the visible skin tissue injuries look very natural. The "finger" actually appears significantly enlarged. My primary differential diagnosis is an extreme form of macrodactyly (Proteus syndrome or similar). The bone stump seems a little strange to me. It reminds me more of an animal bone, because it looks too thick-walled for a "human finger". Since no cross-sectional images of the bone exist, my statement is purely speculative. If the object is a forgery, which cannot be definitively ruled out, it is a very well-made work.

The well-known German criminal biologist and specialist in forensic entomology, Dr. Mark Benecke, commented on the photos of the relic as follows: "Unfortunately, the photos do not allow us to say exactly what kind of object it is. Stories of desiccated beings, which are also presented and may very well consist of bones and skin, are often told from or into this area. I consider it feasible to investigate whether the tissue is human, animal or other as soon as tissue or material samples are available. In view of the known forgeries, but also a possible tissue alteration (macrodactyly etc.), nothing can be said on the basis of the photos. Tissue examination with fine sections and DNA, on the other hand, should be feasible or at least enable certain assumptions to be ruled in or out.

Spörri observed the finger in detail and was able to determine that what he was holding was old, organic and humanoid. The finger looked like it had been cut off with anatomical precision, and in some places was crumbled. The leathery skin was ripped in places and the skin was a few mm thick. Between the dried skinfolds he could see remains of fungus and the nail was loose. The surface of the skin was damaged in some places, as if mice had gnawed on it. The bone felt woody.

The photos and X-rays were examined by professionals who could see no evidence of fakery.

According to the German newspaper, BILD.de, a Swiss nightclub owner named Gregor Spörri took a number of photos of a mummified giant finger in 1988. The owner was a retired grave robber who was based in the district of Bir Hooker, near Sadat City, about 100 KM (62.14 miles) north of Cairo. The finger is nearly 14 inches (35cm) long and, if it is genuine, it belonged to someone estimated to have been between 15 and 16 feet (4.57-4.88 meters) tall (or someone with oversized hands!). However, the discovery was only revealed on March 9th, 2012, twenty-four years later, and since then there has been no official rebuff of the discovery.

Nagib told Gregor that it was found about 150 years ago and had been kept in the family, who had even gone to the trouble of getting the finger X-rayed to confirm its authenticity in the 1960s. Spörri had to pay 300 dollars to see the mummified finger and take pictures of it.

“Nagib refused to tell Spörri where the finger was found but made allusions to a hidden room in the basement of the Great Pyramid where huge, empty graves are located. Nagib made it clear that the relic was not for sale as it was too important for Nagib's family. Before he returned to his hotel, Spörri took a number of photos where he put a banknote next to the finger in order to indicate the size.”

The problem is, nineteen years later he went back to Egypt to locate the gentleman, but he could not find Nagib and no one knew where he was. A DNA sample would have been useful, but the X-ray, the detailed photographs, and his thorough description do hint that this was a genuine mummified finger.
