East African Beauty Secrets: Oils, Herbs, and Traditional Practices

The beauty traditions of East Africa are rich with natural ingredients and time-honored practices. From hair care to skincare, indigenous peoples have long utilized the power of herbs, oils, and other natural elements to maintain health and enhance their beauty. This article explores some of these fascinating secrets.

Hair Care Traditions

Oils and Butters

Coconut oil is a preferred oil for hair, known locally as "cocos kibat." However, some families avoid it due to its strong smell. In rural areas, butter is used as a pre-poo treatment and even as a leave-in conditioner.

When I was younger, my grandmother (and her mother) often came on week ends to give my mother some palm oil (the dark on made with palm nuts) to put in our hair after she washed it when damp. I remember that my hair was soft and nourished when I was younger.

Skincare Secrets

Fenugreek

In the east of the country, people eat a lot of fenugreek. It's a pretty bitter pungent spice, similar to garlic in that the smell lingers on your skin. However, it gives you amazingly airbrushed-looking skin if you get past that. You can make a fermented paste of honey, water and fenugreek and take a teaspoon daily. I don't like the texture, but it's great for skin. Turmeric with milk (teaspoon) once daily is also good.

Qasil (Kesil)

There is also an herb that is made into a paste and applied on the face as a face mask and as sunscreen. It is called "kesil" or "qasil". Some believe it to be the Neem plant, but this remains unconfirmed.

Traditional Cleansing Mud

One woman shared her sister-in-law from Sudan uses a brown mud to clean her skin and hair. She also has three bags of dried mud/herb flakes in the freezer. You add a little water to a small amount in a bowl; rub it all over your body and then rinse it off.
