Despite the undeniable rise of global football and the increasing inclusivity of the game, there remains a stubborn undercurrent of bias that still holds back the recognition of African footballing legends. In a world where European and South American stars dominate the conversation, Africa's finest players often find themselves overshadowed, their incredible feats dismissed or overlooked.
To this day, there has been only one African Ballon d'Or winner, and despite its rich history, the African Cup of Nations is still often written off as a ‘secondary’ competition - one that disrupts the regular football season rather than being celebrated for the continental masterpiece that it truly is.
Whether it's due to geography, the exodus of African talent to European clubs, or the historical biases that have persisted for decades, the truth remains: Africa has birthed some of the greatest footballers the game has ever seen. Yet, these icons - past and present - often don’t get the recognition they so rightly deserve.
While this piece won’t change the deep-seated perceptions overnight, we’ve set out to highlight and celebrate the greatest African footballers of all time. Join us as we shine a long-overdue spotlight on the legends who’ve shaped the beautiful game and left their mark on the global stage.

Defining "Skill" in Football
Secondly, let's be more specific and define skill. There are very many different skill-sets. Having a great touch is a skill, the ability to create and make precise pin-point passes is a skill, having a great shot is a skill, the ability to feint one's body in order to fool a defender is a skill.... So which one are we talking about here??? It seems like most people are referring to dribbling.
Abedi Pele: An icon of African football.
Abedi Pele: The Maestro
Which is why I wonder if any of you were fortunate enough to witness Abedi Pele? The man dribbled as if the ball were attached to his feet. His style of play was very silky, very graceful and very very beautiful. The Brazilian Pele was so impressed by Abedi's "skills" that he named him to his all time 125 greatest living footballers list. That in itself is remarkable considering that there was no Youtube, SkySports or BigSoccer back then.
George Weah: The Lone Ballon d'Or Winner
George Weah: The only African player to win the Ballon d'Or.
Easy. George Weah. The only African player to be World player of the year 1995. European player of the year 1995 and African player of the year 1989,1994, & 1995. Weah was also voted the African player of the Century by sport journalist from all around the world. A lot more people would recognize his name if he had played for a bigger National team than Liberia.

Other Notable Players
WEll i say that Drogba has just a freakin amazin skill with Chelsea at the moment. Plays really well with the ball and not afraid to take shot. No Doubt ! The most skillfull African at the moment is between Drogba and Eto'o.
Jay-Jay is the most skillful player Nigeria has ever produced. He is still a great midfield talent. Most certainly would be near the top of any list of “most skillful” player from Africa as well as one of the best players ever to come from the Continent.
