While the multicultural paradise of Mauritius, set between Africa and India, has plenty to offer away from the beaches like scrumptious food and dynamic art and music scenes, visitors flock to the island for dips in its pool-like waters lined by ribbons of the softest sands. So, if there's one thing the island knows how to do, it's hotels, making choosing where to stay in Mauritius no slim feat.

West Coast, Wolmar: Lively Local Beach Vibes At Sugar Beach
Sugar Beach Hotel in Flic en Flac is one of the most popular hangouts for locals and travelers. Part of the Mauritian Sunlife group, Sugar Beach opened in the 90s, and comes with a much appreciated local edge. Located in Wolmar, close to lively Flic en Flac, it has one of the islandās longest and most beautiful beaches. The size of the hotel becomes evident at mealtimes at its large buffet restaurant, which has an array of cooking stations, while the other, smaller outlet Tides, sits right by the water, serving local curries, European favorites and seafood.
Being within a 5-minute drive to Flic en Flacās nightlife, itās easier here to mingle with locals and get a glimpse of everyday island life than it is at more secluded resorts.
The Oberoi Mauritius
The Oberoi Mauritius belongs to Oberoi Hotels & Resorts Group. Founded in 1934, the Group has properties in six countries and a wealth of experience in providing superb service. Last year, this resort won Mauritius Leading Hotel at the World Travel Awards!

The Oberoi is located on the north-west coast of Mauritius, just 15km from capital city Port Louis and close to the vibrant village of Grand Baie. It is set in approximately eight hectares of resplendent sub-tropical gardens, lining the white-sand shores of Turtle Bay. The grounds of The Oberoi are not only aesthetically pleasing but of historical interest too, as the site is home to four national monuments dating back to French colonial times.
These formed part of the defense system of Mauritius and today the main gunpowder store is one of The Oberoiās three restaurants. Other eateries The Restaurant and On the Rocks are positioned overlooking the Indian Ocean, as is The Bar.
The resort also boasts a spa, fitness center, tennis courts and two swimming pools. Guest accommodation at The Oberoi consists of four options - Luxury Pavilion, Luxury Villa with Garden, Luxury Villa with Private Pool and Royal Villa with Private Pool. The buildings have delightful thatched roofs and contemporary interiors, the latter featuring rustic cane furniture and local artifacts and photography.
All categories are air-conditioned and include king-size or twin bed/s, living area, private dining space, sunken marble bathroom, satellite TV, high-speed Wi-Fi, iPod dock, electronic safe and espresso coffee maker. At extra cost, guests may enjoy diving and deep-sea fishing.
Farther afield, guests may like to visit attractions such as Port Louis, Ile aux Cerfs, Pamplemousses gardens and Black RiverGorgesNational Park.

Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury
As part of the Mauritian Beachcomber group, it has held onto its local soul, resisting the allure of international chains that have reshaped much of the islandās hospitality landscape. Here, despite being steps away from Grand Baie's bustling nightlife, calm and authenticity reign. The immaculate 69 sea-facing rooms carry a sense of timelessness thatās reflected in the intimate touches and the service that is discreet and yet deeply personal.
The open-sided, thatched-roof pavilions, with their breezy wooden interiors, echo the relaxed elegance of Mauritian island life. The main restaurant, perched on a deck that extends over the water, is a dreamlike setting. At the heart of the property is the Valmont spa, where personalized treatments and private training sessions are elevated to an art form by its passionate director.
There are two pools-one near the spa, the other steps from the beach-and itās the beach that commands the spotlight. This is a place where attention to detail and tradition are woven into every interaction, and it's what keeps the Royal Palm top of the list for the hotel's roster of guests who come back here year after year. For those who appreciate quiet, unflashy elegance, the Royal Palm is a true sanctuary.
Lakaz Chamarel
A personal favorite, Lakaz Chamarel is a hidden gem of a lodge tucked away in the lush, jungly hills of Chamarel, near the Black River Gorges National Park-a must-visit for nature-lovers. Lakaz Chamarel itself is a picture of tranquility. Wooden pavilions are scattered throughout centuries-old gardens, originally part of a banana plantation, still lovingly tended by local gardeners who know every inch of this paradise.
Centered around a serene pool shaded by palms, the property boasts plenty of outdoor nooks perfect for lounging, with fantastic hiking trails just steps away. Be sure to head to the hillside bar before dinner, where local rums are poured with pride, and the panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding mountains are unbeatable.

LUX* Le Morne is A Beachfront Paradise In The Shadow Of A Mountain. When it comes to beaches, Le Morne in Mauritius is hard to beat. This idyllic south coast stretch features bright white sand that meets crystalline waters, against the backdrop of the majestic Morne Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

South Coast, Bel Ombre: Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort
Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort, A Heritage House Close To A Nature Reserve. First mentioned by author Bernardin de Saint-Pierre in his 1773 novel Paul et Virginie, Bel Ombre has long been part of Mauritiusā cultural fabric. Once a bustling sugar plantation, it is now a sprawling estate that has reimagined its colonial past into a carefully curated luxury retreat.
Once overseen by the Irish botanist Charles Telfair, the plantation closed its sugar factory in 1999 after more than 200 years of cultivation. Since then, the estate has pivoted towards a more sustainable future with aspirations of becoming a carbon-neutral destination. Le Telfair is one of Mauritiusā most exclusive addresses, and greets guests in a light, open-air reception loosely inspired by Mauritian colonial plantation homes.
The heart of the resort is the main pool and its beachfront restaurants, each offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. Neighboring the Telfair, the more accessible Awali resort draws families, while inland, the Casa Lala bed and breakfast offers a quieter, more intimate experience.
Just a five-minute buggy ride from the resort, Château de Bel Ombre transports diners to the 19th century, when sugar was Mauritius' main lifeline. Inside, polished wooden floors creak underfoot, and tables dressed in crisp white linens are scattered throughout the space. The menu draws on French-Creole traditions, offering dishes like palm heart salad and chicken cari, prepared with ingredients sourced from the island.
The sumptuous main lobby at Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort is reminiscent of colonial style.
Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa
The luxurious suites and villas of Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa are located on a stunning stretch of white, sandy beach, on Mauritiusās north-west coast. This tranquil hotel is positioned on its own piece of paradise, nestled within 35-hectares of tropical gardens. It borders a gloriously long section of tree-lined beach, known for its calm turquoise waters, ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The centre of Grand Baie is five miles away, where youāll find a variety of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the islandās best nightlife. Youāre also within 12 miles of the capital city, Port Louis, a city retaining the old and combining the new.
Pamplemousses Botanical Garden - otherwise known as the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Garden - showcases the unique flora of Mauritius including the Talipot tree - which blooms every 30-80 years. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is 40 miles away.
The all-suite property feels like a tropical village, where small numbers of thatched, traditional buildings are clustered in crescents around a shared pool. Each suite is undeniably luxurious and contemporary in style, combined with subtle decor elements representing Mauritian heritage. All suites feature a spacious balcony or terrace with views of the lush gardens or Indian Ocean. Tropical Junior Suites even boast an open-air shower to enjoy the scenic surroundings, before retreating to the modern comforts of flat-screen satellite TVs and free Wi-Fi.
The main pool that overlooks the beach is a real showstopper. Itās oval, tiered and interspersed with āfloatingā palm trees - and surrounded comfy loungers and cream coloured canvas parasols on the wooden deck. You can also laze on the picturesque beach, dappled in shade from the palm trees and palapa umbrellas. The water is clear, warm and calm - thanks to the local reef, breaking the waves.
Head to the boathouse to take advantage of the complimentary water sports, which include water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, pedal boating, snorkelling and glass-bottom boat excursions. The fitness centre features three dedicated studios - one for strength training, another cardio with Technogym equipment, and a third for yoga, aerobics and spinning. In addition, you have access to two hammams and free use of six floodlit tennis courts as well as privileged access to the 18-hole Mont Choisy Le Golf course.
Hidden away in a quiet corner of the resort and surrounded by lush, tropical gardens is the hotelās beautiful spa - with 17 massage cabins, including some double cabins. Relax in the two saunas, two steam rooms and the balneotherapy room. Thereās also a lovely pool and a hair and nail salon.
For families, the hotel offers an impressive range of facilities, such as the spacious, all-day kidsā club for children aged 3 to 7 and 8 to 11. Itās cosily housed under a thatched roof, surrounded by coconut trees, near to reception with its own pool with a large wooden deck, a dedicated area for afternoon naps, a kitchen and an exclusive buffet restaurant to suit children's preferences. Outdoor activities are encouraged, plus thereās a series of creative and discovery workshops covering painting, collage, cooking and nature. Baby care facilities are also available, as is special baby food and babysitting service for one- to three-year-olds during the week (between 13:00 and 16:00). The hotel is home to six outstanding restaurants and two bars. You have a choice of two restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The relaxed LāOasis sits poolside and offers fantastic sea views. It features its own bar and private gazebo above the water - a perfect spot for a romantic evening meal. Meanwhile, the beachside La Caravelle showcases the finest Mauritian Bistronomy using fresh ingredients. As the name suggests, La Plage is also located along the stunning stretch of beach, open for a la carte lunch and dinner, including gourmet salads, seafood and typical local dishes. Head over to the chic trattoria Il Corallo, where dishes are inspired by the Mediterranean, paired with the perfect bottle of wine from the restaurantās cellar. Blue Ginger prepares the finest dishes from Asia, where you can watch the masters at work from the restaurantās open kitchen, and Mahiya presents a tantalising feast of north Indian cuisine. L'Oasis Bar is the ideal place for a relaxing drink, light bites for lunch, snacks, pancakes and ice cream. La Caravelle Bar is the place to sip homemade rum, while watching the sun set into the sea.
