The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) plays a crucial role in Uganda's digital transformation.

Representing the Principal, Mr. Henry Ssebunya delivered a powerful presentation on UICT’s role in transforming ICT training through skills development, research, and innovation during a live broadcast of the State of the Digital Economy Conference on NBS TV.

UICT's Role in Skills Development and Innovation

“At UICT, we are not just producing graduates, but innovators, problem-solvers and job creators. Our focus is to align training with industry needs while fostering entrepreneurship through incubation, mentorship, and regional collaboration,” said Mr. Ssebunya.

UICT student innovators, Frank Muhindo and Lillian Lwanja, scooped the 2nd Runners-Up Award for their innovation, Temperature and Dust Monitoring System (TDMS) at the recently concluded 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 9th African Engineering Conference held at Speke Resort-Munyonyo. TDMS is an Artificial Intelligence powered Internet of Things solution designed to safeguard coffee quality in storage warehouses. The conference, organized by Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) aimed to highlight the importance of sustainable engineering solutions in tackling Africa’s development challenges.

Addressing Cybersecurity Challenges

Importantly, Mr. Ssebunya addressed the growing risks in cyberspace, noting that while technology offers boundless opportunities, cybersecurity remains a pressing challenge. With cyberattacks and internet fraud on the rise, he stressed that the human element is often the weakest link. He called for deliberate efforts in staff training, cybersecurity awareness, risk management, incident response planning and robust security infrastructure visibility solutions as essential steps to safeguard Uganda’s digital future.

Mr. Ssebunya was joined by other dignitaries who graced the conference, including Dr. Hatwib Mugasa, Executive Director of NITA-Uganda; Hon. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC); and Mr. Kin Kariisa, Group CEO of Next Media.

Nationwide ICT Retooling Programme

The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology in partnership with Uganda Communications Commission and Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda, is rolling out a nationwide ICT Retooling Programme for secondary school teachers. Starting with 750 teachers in Moroto, Fort Portal & Mbarara, we’re equipping teachers for a smarter Uganda, building #DigitalLiteracy, #Cybersecurity skills & #EdTech (Google Workspace, Moodle & #Canva).

Digital Inclusion Initiatives

Building on the achievements of the first Introduction to Computer Basics for the Visually Impaired (ICBVI) program which equipped dozens of visually impaired Ugandans with essential computer literacy and navigation skills, UICT has officially launched the second phase of the ICBVI training. These foundational digital skills are key to enhancing independence, employability and inclusion in today’s technology-driven world.
