Black Iron Boerboels
Located on a working farm in Indiana about an hour north of Indianapolis, we are known as premiere South African Boerboel breeders here in the USA and abroad. We stepped into the “owned by a Boerboel” world and fell in love after many years of closely following the breed. We have been serious dog breeders for over 39 years, but quickly fell head first into a Boerboel obsession after purchasing our first puppy in 2014.
While everyone enjoys looking at a big gorgeous dog, our primary focus is producing healthy dogs with a true Boerboel temperament. First and foremost our dogs are true farm dogs. Health is also key to us, and we work diligently to ensure that we produce a dog with the health needed to support the temperament for years to come.
I am very blessed to have a full in house fertility lab here at Black Iron…where we also do everything from progesterone testing, transcervical implants, semen storage, ultrasounds and more! We provide lifetime breeder support to all in the Black Iron family, and our Boerboel puppies always have a home with us. The Boerboel is a very calm and stable breed, with a great composure and confidence. Their most defining features and traits include a muscular build contrasted with a warm and affectionate nature around families. Our Top Tier Boerboels puppies are known to have long life expectancies, making them a loyal companion with high levels of intelligence and trainability.
Boerboel Breed Characteristics
Key Characteristics:
- Adult Weight: Male 143-176 pounds; Female: 110-143 pounds
- Height: 22-27 inches
- Coat: Short, dense, soft, smooth, and shiny
- Color: Fawns, reds, blacks, browns, brindle, piebald, and Irish markings
Note: Black and tan Boerboels are not officially recognized by major breed organizations. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not accept them, as their coloring falls outside the breed standard, which includes fawn, cream, red, brown, reddish brown, and brindle. Despite this, supporters of black and tan and the blue and tan Boerboels argue that these dogs share the same loyal, protective, and intelligent traits that make the Boerboel breed so desirable.

Dating back to 1652, this breed is a descendant of the Boer dog. In the 20th century, the Boerboel was nearly extinct.
