The list contains a cricketer who took over the duties in 2003 at the age of just 22 and continued to lead them till his retirement in 2014. He also holds the world record of playing the most number of matches (108) as a Test captain.

A unique inclusion of this list is a player who led on Test debut, when South Africa sent a second-string squad to New Zealand in 2024. He played both matches but hasn’t represented the team since.

Yet the most significant moment under a South African captain’s tenure came when they won the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s, ending their 27-year ICC trophy drought.
