South Africa in October: The Perfect Time for Travel

There isn’t one best time to visit South Africa, but October is definitely a strong contender. October falls in South Africa's spring going on summer, with warm temperatures throughout and little rain. It is the perfect time of the year to visit much of the country, given that the weather is warm and mostly dry throughout the country. In fact, it’s great to visit South Africa in October, as the whole country generally has appealing weather.

Here's what you can expect when traveling to South Africa in October:

  • Warm temperatures throughout the country.
  • Evening temperatures also warming up when compared to the weather in September and August.
  • The regions of Cape Town, Kalahari, and Kruger are largely dry, with only a couple of centimeters or inches of rain falling in the month of October.

Visitors to South Africa in October can expect to feel comfortable in summer clothing for most of their trip, from skirts and cotton shorts or trousers to dresses and linen shirts. You would likely be a little warm if you are sightseeing, so we don't recommend wearing too many layers.

October is the start of the rainy season outside the Western Cape (though afternoon showers rarely bother safari-goers). In fact, peak safari season runs until the end of October and it can be quite hot – averaging 30°C. Migratory birds arrive from now, staying until April.

Many hotels are eager for business after several relatively quiet months and offer their best rates of the year in October. Popular destinations can fill up, however, during the spring school holiday that extends into early October. And by month’s end, Cape Town's gorgeous cloudless skies are edging the city into high season.

Weather Patterns in Different Regions

To better understand what to expect, it's helpful to consider the weather patterns in different regions of South Africa:

  • Kruger & Around: The ‘Kruger & Around’ sections below relate to the parks and reserves in Greater Kruger and in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. These parks have a climate pattern similar to Kruger National Park. In summer (October to April) afternoon showers are common, humidity increases and it can get uncomfortably hot.
  • Cape Town & Around: The ‘Cape Town & Around’ sections below apply to the entire Western Cape and nearby parks. Summer (October to April) in Cape Town is warm and mostly dry. The Garden Route is an in-between area with moderate rainfall throughout the year.

Here's a table summarizing the typical weather conditions:

Region Rainfall Temperature
Kruger National Park Afternoon showers common Hot, with high humidity
Cape Town Warm and mostly dry Pleasant

Early October is an excellent time for a self-drive safari. The weather is still mostly dry, and road conditions aren't a challenge; by late October, rainfall can be quite heavy and protracted in Kruger and the surrounding game park.

Top Destinations to Visit in October

October is the perfect time to visit Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Kruger National Park.

Here are some specific recommendations:

  1. Johannesburg: Johannesburg is South Africa's biggest city, and there are so many opportunities to learn about South Africa's past here. Combine your Kruger safari with a visit to Johannesburg, where the October temperature is sublime, and the city is abloom with vivid purple jacarandas. To see them at their best, drive along the leafy avenues of the Greenside and Parktown suburbs, then explore Soweto Township, including the Nelson Mandela Museum.
  2. Kruger National Park: Regardless of the fact that October is when Kruger National Park gets warmer, we would still highly recommend visiting. It is one of the most memorable things to go in South Africa. Although October is an off-season month for Kruger safaris, there are advantages to game drives this month. Vegetation is sprouting afresh with the onset of the wet season, and many animals give birth in October to provide their offspring with the best chance of survival. And although Kruger and the northern game parks will be hot by day, early morning game drives are no longer icy. Since the northern game parks lie in the malarial belt, check with your doctor about the appropriate medication before you travel.
  3. Cape Town and the Wine Region: The areas around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are well known to be home to some of the most delicious wines, and there are plenty of vineyards and wineries to visit around the area. Head out on a wine tasting tour and take in the beautiful sites along the way. This wine region is not too far from Cape Town, so is well-combined with a few days sightseeing in and around Cape Town. And depending on weather conditions, the spectacular wildflower display of spring should still be carpeting the West Coast and semi-desert of Northern Cape, where the flood of September tourism will have abated.
  4. Langkloof Valley: The warm, generally dry weather of October is perfect for two-wheel exploration. Many tour operators offer mountain bike safaris in the private game parks-a novel and a less intrusive way to see eye-to-eye with gazelles and giraffes. Or rent a bike to create your cycling holiday in the South African wilderness. Follow the deep, lush Langkloof Valley inland of Knysna for an easy ride. The Langkloof is a long valley in South Africa between the cities of George and Gqeberha, and it is a very popular destination with mountain bikers, mountaineers, and hikers, as well as photographers. There are gorges and waterfalls to walk through, with a huge range of difficulties of hikes, meaning that it is possible for almost everyone to experience some of the tranquil and breathtaking sites. If you are planning on going hiking or biking in the Langkloof we do recommend bringing the proper gear and protective gear for cyclists.
  5. Overberg Coast: There's no better month for spotting newborn whales off the Overberg coast of Western Cape. Early October, immediately after the seam-bursting Hermanus Whale Festival, is best.
