The Master Crafted Single Origin range of coffee capsules by Nespresso offers coffees made by master craftsmen who apply specific processes to produce a distinctive and memorable coffee experience. The Ethiopia Original Line capsule by Nespresso is one of these varieties, and this article provides an in-depth review.
The Essence of Ethiopia in a Capsule
The Nespresso Master Crafted Single Origin Ethiopia coffee has an Enzymatic, Fruity, Berry-like, Apricot type aroma that is captivating. The flavor profile is characterized by Sour, Winey, and Tangy notes, creating a unique taste experience reminiscent of a fine wine.
Once sold under the Yirgacheffe name, coffees from this area are now being recognized with more regionally specific designations. Gedeb coffees, similar in style to Yirgacheffes, are often found to be a little bigger, bolder, and less subtle.

Banko Gotiti: The Source
Banko Gotiti is the name of both the village and the washing station where this coffee was produced. The washing station is owned and operated by METAD Agricultural Development PLC.
The family-run company was gifted property by Emperor Selassie in honor of the matriarch, Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot. METAD is now managed by her grandson Aman Adinew, and its export partner Rift Valley Trading LLC is operated by his brother Michael Adinew.
The Art of Roasting
Artizan Coffee uses a complex, time-consuming, and skilled process known as “split-roasting” technique for this estate coffee. One part of the beans is roasted for a shorter time and a lighter color in order to highlight the delicate flavors and aromas of the coffee.

A Gran Cru Experience
This is definitely a Gran Cru capsule, and a lot of effort has gone into growing and producing this coffee. The copper colors used for the sleeves and capsules remind the enjoyer of the coffee that it is like a fine berry.
I’ve seen some poor reviews about the Nespresso Master Crafted Single Origin Ethiopia coffee; however, I think these reviews are unjustified. Clearly this is a Gran Cru capsule, and a lot of effort has gone into growing and producing this coffee.
Brewing Recommendations
You can brew the Master Crafted Single Origin capsules as either an Espresso or a Lungo, but I highly recommend for the Ethiopia capsule that you make it an Espresso.
You should also check out the other Master Crafted Single Origin capsules like Colombia (late harvest, water processed), Nicaragua (honey processed), Indonesia (wet hulled), and India (monsooned).
