A Glimpse into History
During the Crimean War in 1850, a British tea merchant realized he wouldn’t be able to deliver his Gunpowder green tea shipment to Scandinavia and diverted it to Morocco instead. The locals quickly made the tea their own by sweetening it and adding mint while brewing. The blend, called Maghrebi, was so smooth and sweet that it soon became a hallmark of Moroccan social life.
In the heart of Morocco, mint tea is not just a beverage; it's a symbol of hospitality. Traditionally served to guests, at business gatherings, or simply when the thirst strikes, Moroccan mint tea is a staple of North African culture. It's also the main thirst quencher in the Sahara, after water, thus making it the most popular tea throughout the region, always served hot.

Traditionally, Moroccan mint tea is prepared by bringing fresh mint (often nana mint), gunpowder green tea leaves, and sugar to a boil in a teapot or kettle, then poured from high above the glass to swirl air through the brew. This creates a sweet, aromatic drink with a bold green tea flavor and cooling spearmint essence. Many tea drinkers in Morocco enjoy the ritual of the first glass, second glass, and third glass, each with its own taste and aroma. Though mint is the star, other herbs like sage can be added for variation.

Here are some general guidelines for brewing:
- Measure 1 tsp of loose tea into an infuser basket.
- Steep in near boiling water for 2-3 minutes.
The Chinese gunpowder green tea which forms the base of this tea blend is comprised of rolled leaves that will take a little longer to steep than some of the more delicate Japanese green teas. Despite their more delicate appearance, the dried peppermint leaf additions will not suffer from being steeped with this green tea.
Though tea balls and strainers are often used for tea that isn't pre-bagged, ideal methods of infusing loose leaf teas employ strainers that allow for the tea leaves to completely unfurl and release their flavor. Teapots with removable strainers for tea will allow a fuller flavor. Some tea enthusiasts dispense with using strainers altogether and drop leaves in the pot directly and then strain the tea when serving into cups.
If you desire a stronger cup, we suggest using more tea rather than a longer steep time to minimize the potential for a more bitter flavor.
Caffeine Content
We are asked all the time how many milligrams of caffeine are in a particular cup of tea, and the honest answer is: we don’t know for sure! The environment each year, location of the bush, processing style and method of steeping all has an effect on the amount in your cup. This is why we only provide a range. We use the lower, medium, and high caffeine labeling on our packages based on past tests and the proportion of tea to ingredients in each blend. A 6 to 8 ounce cup of tea generally contains between 15 and 70 milligrams of caffeine.

Climate Neutral Certified is the leading independent climate action label. It gives you a way to find companies that are actively working toward a net-zero future.
