A Storied Past
The Masindi Hotel, located just outside the once bustling town of Masindi in Uganda, has a rich history and is a gateway to some of the country’s most remarkable destinations. Masindi Hotel was built in 1923 by the now defunct East Africa Railways and Harbours Company. After independence Masindi Hotel was taken over by the Government, and it was a part of the Uganda Hotels chain for nearly 30 years. In 2000, Masindi Hotel was privatized and has undergone major renovations.
During the era of British exploration, renowned explorers Sir Samuel and Lady Florence Baker passed through Masindi and its surrounding area. Even Sir Winston Churchill visited the town on his journey to Murchison Falls.
There was a time when you had to make reservations a year ahead of time - The Masindi Hotel, built in 1923 by the Ugandan Railways and Harbor Company. The town was also home to an international airport in nearby Butiaba. The port of Butiaba was and is nearby, and it was not only a place of commerce but of tourism.

Masindi was a transit point for many goods and produce from the Northern Congo and Southern Sudan destined for export to European markets in the early 20th century. Cargo was shipped across Lake Albert, trucked from Butiaba up to Masindi Customs Sheds. From Masindi, goods were trucked on to Masindi Port on to Lake Kyoga where it was shipped down to Soroti and then by railway to Mombasa.
Today, The Masindi Hotel is a historic landmark and the gateway to Murchison Falls National Park, Bundongo Forest, and other captivating destinations.

Masindi Hotel - a Hotel in Uganda with a lot of History - was also home to Ernest Hemingway and their wife when his airplane crashed after hitting an old telephone wire at Murchison Falls - he, like the explorer Samuel Baker and his wife Florence, had to spend some time along the shores of the Nile. Ernest Hemingway was involved in two plane crashes at Murchison Falls and Butiaba airstrip, within the space of one week. When he was rescued and taken to Butiaba, as the second plane took off, it also crashed. The world press declared Hemingway dead - but he was sipping his favorite liquor at the Masindi Hotel, recovering from burns, bruises, and severe injuries. Ernest Hemingway recovered at Masindi Hotel for 3 months.

Even I had stayed there before they remodeled back in the 1990’s1990sing, around 10 pm after traversing almost impossible roads. Today, the Masindi Hotel provides a moderately priced hotel, a favorite of birders, those on the way to Murchison Falls Park or back to Kampala. Masindi Hotel is a hotel in Uganda with a lot of History and a list of famous former guests. It provides quiet comfort and good food to clients from far and wide.
