Astrology plays a significant role in many people's lives, offering insights into personality traits, relationships, and future events. However, the traditional Western astrological system is based on the Northern Hemisphere, which raises questions about its accuracy for those born in the Southern Hemisphere, including South Africa.
If you were born in the Southern Hemisphere, your birth chart is not completely accurate. In the Southern Hemisphere, the Sun also rises in the East but we see it as crossing the Northern sky from right to left. So in the Southern Hemisphere birth chart, the houses run counter-clockwise.
Practically, the main Southern Hemisphere difference is that the Southern hemisphere Moon’s Nodes could be seen as reversed: the Ascending - or North - Node that shows in astrological charts* is the South Node if you were born below the equator.
It may seem semantic but representation is important. Every time you have to adjust something in your mind for it to be relevant, it affirms that something irrevocably not you is “the top” or “correct.”
There are some fabulous Northern astral sagas but Southern Hemisphere people end up reading more about constellations they never - or barely - see than their stars. An example: ‘Arctic’ means bear and comes from the constellations that revolve around the North Pole, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor.

The story of the Southern skies and star lines is less known than the constellation myths of the North but it’s re-emerging via archeoastronomy and the study of indigenous starlore. One of my areas of interest - for study when time permits - is the Southern Cross: the Incans saw it as some kind of portal.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius
In astrology, there are four elements that correspond to the 12 zodiac signs: air, fire, earth, and water. Each element brings its own unique talents, traits, and energy to the signs that it covers. Air signs, for example, bring a breath of fresh air wherever they go. They’re curious, communicative, and driven by the pursuit of ideas.
The zodiac air signs-Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius-are the big-picture thinkers, idea generators, and social butterflies of the zodiac. They thrive on intellectual stimulation, connection, and envisioning possibilities. They’re represented by a need for curiosity and love for connection, and they thrive when they’re free to explore and express.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Gemini traits include being witty and full of banter, and they enjoy connecting with others through the written or spoken word. These social butterflies thrive on interaction, making them excellent conversationalists.
Gemini is the natural ruler of the third house of communication, and this blesses them with the gift of gab. There is rarely a person they can’t win over, which is why they make talented salespeople, keynote speakers, performers, and entertainers.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)
Libra has an eye for beauty and a knack for bringing balance. As a cardinal sign, Libras are natural-born leaders and innovators with a deep concern for balance and harmony in their approach.
Libra is the natural ruler of the seventh house of relationships and long-term partnerships. These folks use their air-sign energy to connect others and create harmony and balance. Being warm, inviting, and naturally beautiful are other Libra traits.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
Aquarius is the zodiac’s mad scientist, here to challenge the status quo and spark a revolution. A fixed sign, Aquarius people are stubborn in their opinions and have no problem going against the grain to hold strong in their belief system.
Aquarius is the natural ruler of the 11th house of friendships, groups, idealism, and a relationship to the collective consciousness. They’re often misunderstood, since they sit as outliers to the masses and are usually responsible for trendsetting on a mass scale.
Air Signs Astrology: An Intro to Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs thrive in relationships that challenge them intellectually and offer plenty of room for growth. They pair well with other air signs (Aquarius, Libra, and Gemini) and fire signs (Sagittarius, Leo, Aries) that ignite their creativity and keep things exciting.

African Astrology
The continent of Africa is deeply mysterious, richly diverse, and utterly intriguing. Home to hundreds of distinct tribes with diverse language systems, it’s no surprise that unique astrology arose there.
African astrology is derived from a divinatory technique known as Geomancy. Three bones are cast onto a flat surface by the practitioner and the lines and angles that they form create a twelve-point system representing the twelve signs of the African zodiac.
The dates and imagery are completely different from western astrology. Where it’s similar though, is that each sign corresponds with one of the four elements: Air, Earth, Water, and Fire, and with a part of the body.
Here's a summary of the African Astrology signs:
