The Curious Case of "Katonda Alinawe": From Ugandan Gospel to Filthy Frank Meme

The internet is a strange and wonderful place, where the most unexpected things can become viral sensations. One such example is the Ugandan gospel song "Katonda Alinawe," which gained unexpected popularity thanks to the "Filthy Frank" character created by musician and YouTuber Joji.

The Origins of "Katonda Alinawe"

Katonda Alinawe (translated as: God is with You), previously known as the Kenya Dance, is a gospel song by Ugandan artist David SonJC. He created it after a dream he had in which a group of people sang the song.

The "Filthy Frank" Connection

On January 14th, 2013, musician and YouTuber Joji (then known by his "Filthy Frank" character) posted a video titled "HOW TO PICK UP WOMEN IN 30 DIFFERENT CULTURES" on his DizastaMusic channel. In this video, a snippet of "Katonda Alinawe" was used, piquing the interest of his fans who immediately wondered what this song was.

The Search Begins

The quest to identify the song became an internet mystery. At one point on December 21st, 2015, a video titled "NEW African Cristiano Ronaldo - AMAZING Long Shot HD" was posted on the TM2 channel. When asked where he got the song from, he claimed he got it from the "Deep Web" and that "it coast [sic] me 10£". This led to speculation that Joji himself got the song from the deep web.

It was speculated that the song is sung in the Luganda language of Uganda, and that the lyrics translated to English are either "The child is born, the boy is taken care of" or "The child's been born for us, the boy's been sent to us", the latter one leading to speculation that it's a Christmas song.

The Spread of the Song

Over time, the song was reuploaded to YouTube by multiple users, such as KoreBoredom, JayKay, Abraham Lost Songs, Q, Revolutionary_War, Aero, and multiple others, amassing over 100k views.

The Breakthrough

On December 3th, 2023, YouTuber nbduckman uploaded a video called "The Search for the Filthy Frank Kenya Song", which explained the history of the search up to that point, mentioned some potential leads, and offered a $300 bounty for finding the song. That same day, Discord user damn peggy watched the video and decided to try searching for the song. He searched YouTube for "east ugandan gospel before:2013", and almost immediately found the song.

nbduckman subsequently released another video that day announcing the find, and awarded the $300 bounty to damn peggy. The name of the song was revealed to be Katonda Alinawe by Ugandan gospel singer David SonJC.

The Irony of "Filthy Frank"

Trying to make a Filthy Frank Funny Moments subpage would be considered pointless due to most of his videos being both vulgar and offensive at best, but just for the benefit of the doubt...

Frank's rant on memes. He starts off the video by saying "Welcome. Do you enjoy anal sex?" in Japanese.
