1. Alewa

Let’s begin with one that makes me nostalgic: Alewa. It’s pronounced something like alley-wa. Alewa comes in bold colors like pink, black, yellow, and white-the brighter, the better. Its distinctive feature is its stripes, which make this toffee a small work of art. Alewa melts quickly on your tongue, leaving behind a sweet, sugary memory that feels like it was never even there. This toffee was made to stick - literally! 😂 Once it’s in your mouth, you’re committed. But that’s exactly what we love about it!

Made from butter, sugar, and condensed milk, it’s soft, chewy, and so rich that you’ll be reaching for another before you’ve even finished the first. It is a great idea which would not only taste great but is a great option to suppress chocolate addiction of children in a smarter and homemade way. This recipe also needs two very easy ingredients which are a condensed milk tin and some butter. “Nkatie” means “groundnut” or “peanut” in Akan. Roasted groundnuts are mixed with caramelized sugar and formed into a crunchy, sweet treat with a satisfying snap. There are actually two versions of this cake: the smooth and the rough. For the smooth Nkatie Cake, groundnuts are crushed into a nearly smooth paste, mixed with sugar, and moulded. The rough version has chunks of groundnut in a delightful trapezium shape, making it pleasing to the eye and even more fun to eat. This is certainly the brittle peanut sweet you don’t know you need until you take a bite. 😂 Peanut Brittle also is known as the Nkate Cut is the perfect mixture of sweetness with the crunchiness of the nuts. You may have a version of this treat in your country, but we call it Abele Walls! I don’t know the origin of the name, but it’s a popular ice cream made from milk, sugar, and flavors like chocolate, coconut, coffee, strawberry, or banana. The mixture is poured into a small cup with a stick in the middle and left to freeze until it becomes a hard, refreshing dessert. On hot days, this is a go-to for a cool treat. Now they are famous all around the world. Who in the world does not like ice cream? But Ghana has added a touch of their taste on the otherwise ordinary ice cream and has made popsicles stuffed with milk and cookies. The rich chocolaty taste of the cookies, the crumbs that would come to your mouth would make it stand out from any other desert.

8. Atadwe Milk

Although this is not a personal favorite because it’s too smooth, Atadwe Milk is one of the most nutritious sweets you’ll find in Ghana. Unlike the others I’ve mentioned, this is more like pudding. “Atadwe” is the local name for tiger nuts, and the pudding is a blend of milk extracted from tiger nuts and rice flour. The result is a creamy, nutty treat often enjoyed with milk. I, however, prefer chewing the raw nuts. 😋
