Nestled in the heart of the historical district of Barrydale, just three hours from Cape Town, lies the Karoo Art Hotel. This unique establishment offers a tranquil retreat, blending artistic expression, cultural immersion, and culinary excellence. Barrydale itself is known for its exceptional culinary, artistic, and adventure experiences, making the Karoo Art Hotel a perfect base for exploring the region.
A Vision of Joy: The Melvill Era
The Karoo Art Hotel does things differently, according to its owners, Rick and Sue Melvill, who prioritize the "art of joy" during your stay. Expect a celebration of art, beautiful interiors that tell a story, divine dishes, and an itinerary that captures what Barrydale has to offer. Rick's journey to owning the hotel began unexpectedly in 2021 when he joined a Klein Karoo Tankwa motorbike tour. Despite the hotel's condition at the time, Rick saw its potential and fell in love with the unusual property.
With the Karoo Art Hotel up for sale and an auction yielding little results, Rick and Sue were able to secure ownership of the establishment. The couple began renovations, opening it up with a bang in 2022. This Karoo country hotel showcases and celebrates art in a big way.
An Immersive Art Experience
On one level, it is a rolling exhibition for local and regional artists. From the lobby to the hotel rooms, you eat, sleep, and breathe art as you are surrounded by stunning pieces. However, the hotel also makes art an immersive experience. From writing programmes, and performances in their Belanti Ballroom, to art retrospectives, the Karoo Art Hotel is a space that inspires and entertains. Over the years, it has hosted Dave Ferguson, Wendy Oldfield, Valiant Swart, Piet Botha & Akkedis, and Nick Turner, to mention but a few.

Unique Accommodations
Part of the appeal of staying at the Karoo Art Hotel is the rooms. Each of the 16 options has its own themes and authentic backstories that add to the experience. The nine Groot Karoo Rooms are spacious and ideal for couples or families in need of more space. A highlight is The Dog Box, a dog-friendly suite that has its own private patio that is separated from the hotel back gardens by a low lattice fence. The Klein Karoo rooms are cosier.
A Culinary Feast
The Karoo Art Hotel offers a feast, not just for the eyes and imagination. The hotel's Karoo Country Restaurant evokes the cuisine of Karoo, spearheaded by Chef Derek Lowe. He is a "Barry" from the original Barry family of Barrydale and an award-winning chef, having won Eat Out magazine's Best Country Restaurant Western Cape Award. You can expect locally sourced ingredients making up dishes like Karoo lamb cutlets, country oxtail spring rolls, Gansbaai hake fillets, and springbok carpaccio.
The culinary experience begins each morning with a complimentary full breakfast.

Getting There
Take route 62, don't rush- just cruise... a gentle meander through Worcester, Robertson, Montagu and finally Barrydale, take a right towards the main road and there she is....
Before dinner, drinks in the bar that opens on both sides onto the wrap-around balcony, locals mingle with guests. By this time, the main street it dead quiet, not a car goes by- nothing, our collective kids are running wild through the main street on bikes and skateboards- I know.... initial parental PANIC.... Perfection!
