Wollo University: History, Programs, and Development

Wollo University (WU) (ወሎ ዩኒቨርሲቲ) is a public university located in the South Wollo Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia. It stands approximately 390 kilometers north of Addis Ababa. Wollo University is one of the federal universities built among a group of 2nd generation Universities in Ethiopia.

The University is at the center of an area characterized by archaeological, anthropological and historical achievements and diverse ethnic and religious groups known for their harmonious coexistence. The area has also featured rich cultural and literary traditions and accomplishments.

Dessie, where one of the campuses is located, is a commercial hub serving a catchment of some seven million people. Kombolcha is an evolving city and has recently been designated as one of the industrial zones of the country.

Establishment and Vision

Wollo University was established in 2005, G.C., making it one of the second-generation universities in Ethiopia. The University was established with a vision to impart quality education to the Ethiopian community to cater to their up-liftment and to accelerate the industrial and social development of the country.

Wollo University envisions being one of the top five universities in terms of outstanding quality education, research, technology transfer, and community development services in Ethiopia by 2025 G.C /2017 E.C.

Missions

  • Provide quality higher education at all levels through regular, extension, distance and continuing education modes so as to produce competent professionals who can support the development Endeavour of the country.
  • Produce competent entrepreneurs who could contribute to the technology transfer Endeavour’s of the country.
  • Undertake researches that help to solve the social-economic problems of the country and that can also add new values and knowledge to the society.
  • Render consultancy and short-term training services to businesses, government and nongovernmental organizations to help them accomplish their objectives.
  • Render various community services to fulfill social responsibilities expected of it as an academic institution.

Goals

In order to meet and exceed the quality and standard requirements of students, trainees and stakeholders, the goals of Wollo University are to:

  • Create a competent, motivated, adaptable, and innovative workforce for the country who can contribute to poverty reduction, and social and economic development through facilitating demand-driven, high-quality education and training, relevant to all sectors of the economy.
  • Promote the entrepreneurial development plan of the country through incubation centers.
  • Offer research-led diversified programmers that is relevant to the country.
  • Prepare trainees with the necessary theoretical knowledge, attitude, and skills so that they can fit for the purpose.

Kombolcha Campus

Kombolcha campus is named as Kombolcha Institute of Technology (KIOT) for engineering and informatics. The campus of Kombolcha has been operating since 2011: he was assigned a strategic role in the developing industrialization of the city as a whole and the district in which it is located.

Research and Community Service

The university is engaged in applied research focused on addressing regional and national development challenges. Its research priorities span agriculture, health sciences, engineering, education, and the social sciences. Wollo University also provides community services such as healthcare outreach, agricultural extension, and civic education.

The university also has a strong focus on research and community service, with several research institutes and projects. It publishes several academic journals, including the African Journal of Business and Social Sciences (AJBS), African Journal of Science and Technology (AJST), African Journal of Economics and Commerce (AJEC), and African Journal of Communication and Information Knowledge (AJCIK).

Wollo University maintains partnerships with local and international institutions. These collaborations support research, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and staff and student mobility.

Diaspora Engagement

IOM is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora services/departments under the Better Regional Migration Management Program to implement a Returned of Qualified Nationals (RQN), Diaspora Engagement activity in Ethiopia. The activity's aim is to identify and engage skilled and qualified diaspora who have left and who are ready to give back to their country of origin by volunteering to improve institutions capacity in key socio-economic sectors agreed with the governments, such as education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, civil engineering, financial systems, and information technology.

The programme offers support for three-month assignments with state institutions or public-benefit organisations such as government agencies, academic institutions, and health facilities.

The expert will be attached to a local institution and his/her daily work will be supervised by the contact person/supervisor allocated to him/her within the respective institution.

The Contract will have a duration of three (3) months and the diaspora can choose to work either on-site or remotely and the deployment can be any time between 1 October - 31 March 2025. If they work on-site, the location will be based on the institution where they will be placed.

Key Duties:

  • Skill development: The main duty of the eligible Diaspora expert that will be used to evaluate his/her performance will be to ensure regular and consistent sharing of knowledge and skills as related to the assignment.
  • Work plan: The immediate supervisor will create a work plan with the assignee in the first week of the assignment to outline clear and time-bound activities to achieve the outputs of the assignment.
  • Monthly Updates: The Diaspora expert will send monthly reports on their progress to the supervisor at the host institution and IOM.
