The Genesis of a Science Education Institution

In 1995, the Government of Zimbabwe recognized the critical need to increase the number of science teachers within the country. To address this challenge, a decision was made to establish a dedicated University of Science Education.

The Bindura University College of Science Education was subsequently founded under the umbrella of the University of Zimbabwe. Arrangements were made to accommodate the college at the Provincial Public Service Training Centre in Bindura.

Opening and Early Development

The College officially commenced operations on March 26, 1996, welcoming an initial cohort of 125 students. The lecturing staff included five lecturers from Cuba, marking a significant international collaboration.

This initiative coincided with the conclusion of the Zimbabwe-Cuba Science Teacher Training program, which had been in operation since the mid-1980s. The new college served as a continuation of the efforts to bolster science education in Zimbabwe.
