Historical Roots
In 1910, three Europeans - Berkely Cole, Lord Cranworth, and Sandy Herd - founded the White Rhino Hotel in what was then British East Africa. According to various historical accounts, the establishment was named after a rhino, which was shot at the site during one of the numerous game-hunts conducted by the white settlers.
The White Rhino Hotel was well-known across the region as the first segregated exclusive pub for whites, and local Africans were kept off with the threat of attacks by guard dogs, which would pounce on them if spotted in the vicinity. In 1965, after independence, the hotel was sold off to an Asian businessman. The bar section was then converted into a seminar hall, and the hotel began to allow in the first African patrons.
Five years later, in 1970, the hotel was sold again.

Aberdare National Park is situated in the North of Nairobi in the southern end of Aberdare Mountain Ranges, on the Eastern Rim Of the Great Rift valley Between Nyeri and Naivasha. The park is 150km East of Nairobi, 87km from Naivasha in the central highlands of Kenya. The park covers the total area of 766 square kilometers and forms the part of Aberdare mountain ranges lying between the elevation of 2000 meters and 4000metres above the sea level.
The park provides habitat for different wildlife that includes Elephants, black rhinos, leopards, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, buffalos, warthogs and bushbucks among others. Rare sightings include those of the Giant Forest hog, bongo, golden cat, serval cat, African wild cat, African civet cat and the blue duiker. Visitors can indulge in picnics, trout fishing in the rivers and camping in the moorlands. Bird viewing is rewarding since it’s the home of over 250 species of birds in the park, including the Jackson’s Francolin, Sparrow hawks, goshawks, eagles, sunbirds and plovers.
