What to Wear in Cape Town, South Africa: A Comprehensive Style Guide

Discovering what to wear in Cape Town involves a wide array of options, ranging from sundresses and suits to yoga pants and jeans. Known as the mother city of South Africa, Cape Town is a warm, energetic place that consists of trendy artistic and model types. People watching from the balcony of a Kloof Street beer bar on a Friday night, the color and print and energy I witness is mesmerizing. As is the individuality Cape Town’s citizens dress with.

There’s no overall uniform to the city, no dominating trend that sweeps across Capetonians. Unlike other cities I’ve visited, the men on the street jump out to me most. They wear leisure suits and bold prints, pristine sneakers and shined up loafers. I visited Cape Town in mid-March, just after Autumn started, and will describe the overall fashion patterns I saw during that time.

Altogether, the answer to what to wear in Cape Town comes down to appropriately dressing for the various types of tours. And, paying attention to suitable footwear that can withstand the city’s diverse terrains. Additionally, adapt your clothing choices to the ever-changing seasons of Cape Town for an enjoyable experience.

Cape Town is a city that has it all, glorious beaches, beautiful winelands and a vibrant nightlife.

General Fashion Tips for Cape Town

Color Palette

Bright, saturated colors are a staple. I see canary yellow, papaya, fuschia and cerulean. When neutrals do appear they’re in spotless white and black. This is not a muted city. Its color palette is as vibrant as the houses in Cape Town’s Bo Kaap neighborhood.

Prints

Florals, stripes, Ankara, batik and Dutch wax prints (what the West recognizes under the generic moniker of “African prints”). Unlike the stereotypical Portlander living in plaid or the Parisian in a black and white striped shirt, no one print summarizes the city. The overall trend I pick up on with print is to wear whatever makes you smile.

Specific Clothing Items

Jeans are a versatile choice and can be worn comfortably in Cape Town.

Tops

Men wear button-downs tucked in and sealed up to the neck or hanging loosely and left undone to the chest. Bold graphic tees and deep v-necks are worn underneath denim jackets or blazers. Women wear fitted tees and tanks, and I notice a fair number of cropped tops, revealing a few inches of skin above high waisted skirts or jeans - Just enough to look both intentional and sultry. I also spot a variety of jumpsuits, ranging from fitted all the way down to full and flowing.

Bottoms

For men it’s denim denim denim. But, not boring denim. I’m talking denim in shades of salmon, aubergine, scarlet and lime. Sometimes it’s a skinny fit, sometimes it’s a wee bit baggy on top and scrunched throughout the lower leg. Often it’s worn cuffed at the ankle to put the choice of footwear on display. If a man isn’t sporting denim they’re seen in slim joggers, printed trousers and tailored suit pants. Women wear skirts of all shapes - Minis that show off the thighs, fitted and slitted knit pencil skirts, maxis barely missing the floor. There are also draped pants, painted on skinnies and denim short shorts. I see women of all sizes rocking crop tops and minis, so if you feel comfortable, do it.

Shoes and Accessories

The accessories in Cape Town aren’t shy. Men wear polished leather shoes, sneakers that demand attention and trendy sandals. Hats are especially common, particularly wide brimmed ranchers, and men often have a bag on them - Not a backpack or heavy messenger bag, but a tote or more commonly, a small crossbody tucked just under the armpit. Women wear scarves loosely across shoulders or knotted to pull hair up. On their feet are gladiators, slip-on sneakers, and lace up sandals. Costume jewelry like chandelier earrings, beaded necklaces and jangly bangles gives an outfit even more pop.

Hair and Makeup

Hair styles are unique to the wearer. There are box braids piled high on the head. Locs (formerly known as dreadlocks) that are loosely pulled to the side or hang past the shoulder. Shaved heads on women and long hair on men. Distinct edges and sharp high tops. Like many beach towns, makeup isn’t harsh.

Essential Items to Pack

  • A colorful top or onesie: I love the vibrancy of Cape Town, and being able to match its spirit in fashion is such fun.
  • Printed tops: Don’t stop at bringing some color with you, load up on prints as well.
  • Sunglasses: Sunglasses are a necessity.
  • Maxi dress: A maxi is so versatile in warm weather.
  • An easy day dress: A knit dress is a no-brainer for a coastal city.
  • Loose pants: Wearing pants in my twenties meant wearing skinny jeans - delving into wide legged pants in my thirties was a game changer.
  • Sandals: In the heat the feet need to breathe.
  • Statement earrings: Punchy accessories are how Capetonians round out an outfit.
  • Bathing suit: You’ll swim in Cape Town. Trust.
  • A hiking outfit: Hiking Lionshead was one of my more rewarding South African experiences.

Seasonal Packing Tips

Adapt your wardrobe to Cape Town's distinct seasons for a comfortable and stylish experience.

Summer (November to February)

The summer months are dry and warm, and perfect for long beach days. Embrace the heat with light, breathable fabrics. In January and February, when the peak summer hits, you should be wearing things like dresses, light long-sleeved cotton shirts (that also protect your arms from UV rays), and shorts. Don't forget your sun hat (not the fashion ones- you need UPF 50+!), UV sunglasses, and a good SPF sunscreen to protect against the strong sun. My go-to summer outfit for a day around town is a comfy sundress or a t-shirt and shorts, sandals, and a denim jacket.

  1. A stunning swimsuit: there are so many amazing beaches; Camps Bay and Clifton are amongst the best!
  2. Denim shorts: every local owns a pair of great denim shorts. There is such a ‘vast selection’ on offer you can pick a pair that reflects your personality and individuality. They are also great for the heat, allowing you to stay cool and catch a tan.
  3. A cross body bag: to keep your essentials close at hand.
  4. A great pair of summery sandals or gladiator sandals: choose something durable and comfortable.
  5. A cool summer dress: in a pastel print to bring in the summer months.
  6. Vests / Tank Tops: you want to remain cool and comfortable at all times, and vests are a great option. Sleeveless so they allow for added comfort and freshness.
  7. Skirts: you can add one or two skirts to your wardrobe;try to pick skirts that are flowing and light. These can be prints of the seasonal trends or you can stick to the neutral colours.

Autumn

Autumn in Cape Town means 70s/80s during the day and the coastal sun is a hot one. Because autumn is cooler, it is a good idea to layer.

  1. Jeans: are both comfortable and trendy, and perfect for the cooler weather and the evenings.
  2. Leggings: are a great alternative to jeans as they add extra comfort and allow for greater movement.
  3. Long sleeve tops: because autumn is cooler, it is a good idea to layer.

Winter (End of May to End of August)

The winter season, lasts from the end of May to the end of August, with strong winds and is really rather wet weather, with an average maximum temperature around 18°C / 64 Fand an average minimum of 8°C / 46 F. Try to avoid skirts and dresses during the autumn and winter months, as the wind will leave you uncomfortable and exposed.

  1. Leather or pleather shorts: Winter is the best season to wear leather, and the material is much warmer than regular shorts.
  2. Boots: As stated before, they are sturdy and practical protecting you from all elements and more specifically the rain.

Spring

In Cape Town Spring is famous for its flower season, as everything is in bloom, creating an enchanted look within the city. Spring brings mild temperatures and the blooming of wildflowers in certain areas. Transitional clothing is ideal. At this point, you want to get out the bright spring dresses- but hold up. Something is wrong… it’s still cold!

  1. Tees and vests / tank tops: similar to the summer season in temperature, trendy vests and t-shirts are essentials. These can be of your favourite bands or seasonal prints to ensure you remain cool and comfortable at all times.
  2. A good jacket or jersey: for the cooler days.
  3. Boots: nearly everyone should have a pair of boots, flat combat style boots for walking.
  4. A short dress: in a floral print as spring is the known as the flower season and this seems fitting.
  5. The same beach wear: that applies to the summer applies to spring.
  6. Trousers or jeans: for the cooler evenings, as the temperature will drop and you want to ensure you are warm.

Additional Tips

  • It is advisable to pack a light rain jacket or an umbrella during Cape Town Tours.
  • The secret to traveling light is to create a capsule travel wardrobe which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes!
  • If you are worried about theft, add items like a money belt or Secret Bra Pocket to your packing list.

Local's Approved Packing List

A pair of black skinny jeans- these will ensure you are both comfortable and stylish. A crossbody bag - to keep your basics on you at all times, the design gives you more security from possibly prying eyes or hands, you don’t want to lose your stuff whilst on holiday and this bag allows you to only bring your essentials out with you, and gives you added security. Walking shoes - whether it be in the markets, the wine route, hiking up lions head- you need appropriate shoes. There will never be a time when there isn’t something to do, and you don’t want to miss out because a poor choice in footwear are holding you back.

Quick Packing Tips

  • I never remember to pack an adapter and South Africa was no different.
  • You may get close to the animals but you cannot beat the detail you’ll see with binoculars.
  • This water bottle is at the top of my South Africa packing list, usually, I used it for its intended purpose (water).

Camera Gear

Want to include great camera gear in your South Africa packing list? This is the time to invest in a good camera and zoom lens.

  • Canon EOS 6D: I shot all of my South Africa photos with this camera body.
  • Beginner? If you’re just starting out with photography, a Canon Rebel is the best kit to start with.
  • GoPro: If you’ll be doing a lot of adventure activities, you can’t go wrong with a GoPro.

Safari Photography Tip

Put your camera’s setting to BURST so that you can hold the shutter button down and get a series of rapid fire shots. This is what will get you the best shot possible of animals in movement.
