Chad Brown: A Dominant Force in Horse Racing

Chad C. Brown, born on December 18, 1978, is a highly accomplished American racehorse trainer. His journey in the world of horse racing is marked by dedication, strategic acumen, and a deep understanding of equine athletes. This article explores Brown's career, highlighting his key achievements and the path that led him to become one of the leading trainers in the industry.

Early Life and Education

Brown was born and raised in Mechanicville, New York. His passion for horses began at an early age, sparked by family visits to the nearby Saratoga race track. He got his first experience around horses during high school working with Standardbred trainer Paul Kelley at Saratoga Raceway. During high school, Brown gained hands-on experience with Standardbreds at Saratoga Raceway, where he learned the intricacies of breaking and training horses.

While pursuing a degree in animal science at Cornell University, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian, Brown took a summer job with Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. By the time he graduated from Cornell, Brown had decided that he would rather train horses and continued working for McGaughey. Starting as a hot-walker, he quickly advanced to a groom, before earning the role of foreman.

Mentorship and Early Career

He took an internship with a veterinarian then accepted an opportunity to work for Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel in 2002. Brown credits Frankel's training methods, particularly his focus on each horse's unique strengths, as the foundation of his future success. Brown earned promotions in Frankel's high-profile operation and was handling a division when he decided to go out on his own in November 2007.

In 2007, Brown gained national attention at the Breeders' Cup, when he stepped in for Frankel, who could not be at the races, saddling Ginger Punch to victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Brown dedicated Cloud Computing's Preakness Stakes win to Frankel, stating that, "I feel this is for him..."

Early Successes

In 2009, Brown won his first New York Racing Association training title at the Aqueduct Racetrack fall meet. In 2010, Brown saddled 17 winners at Saratoga Race Course finishing third in the standings. In 2011, Brown won his first career Grade I race with the French-bred mare Zagora in the Diana Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Just two weeks later, he secured his second Grade I victory with Stacelita, in the Beverly D. The following year, 2012, Zagora won several major stakes, including the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Brown ran his first horse in the Kentucky Derby in 2013 and finished a good fourth with Normandy Invasion. Brown has won such races as the Arlington Million and Sword Dancer Stakes but his biggest weekend of racing in his career so far had to come at the 2014 Breeders' Cup where he won three races, including Lady Eli's win in the Juvenile Fillies, Bobby's Kitten's Turf Sprint tally and Dayatthespa and Stephanie's Kitten running first and second in the Filly & Mare Turf. The next day, Brown enjoyed another day of firsts.

Brown continued to reside in the elite echelon of trainers during 2020-22, campaigning top horses such as Raging Bull, Search Results, Dunbar Road, Public Sector, Bleecker Street, Jack Christopher, and Zandon. In 2022, Brown picked up his second win in a Triple Crown race when Early Voting, owned by Cloud Computing’s co-owner Klaravich Stables, took the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
