South Africa is a land of diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and, stunning waterfalls. From the iconic Victoria Falls (straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe) to the numerous picturesque cascades along the Panorama Route, there's a waterfall adventure waiting for every traveler.
Here are some of the best waterfalls in South Africa:
The Panorama Route: A Waterfall Paradise
Graskop, a small town in Mpumalanga, serves as the gateway to the Panorama Route, arguably South Africa’s most scenic road trip. This route is famed for its abundance of picturesque waterfalls; in fact, there are more waterfalls along this route than anywhere else in South Africa!
During a one-day trip, you can enjoy the wonderful Bridal Veil Falls, the Mac Mac Falls, Lone Creek Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Lisbon Falls, and Berlin Falls. The Mpumalanga province even has a real waterfall route.
Bridal Veil Falls is part of the Sabie Waterfall Route, but the walk isn’t super easy and can get challenging in places.

Lone Creek Falls are also part of the waterfall route in the area of Sabie, Mpumalanga. Come here first thing in the morning before the crowds arrive. The best way to appreciate this natural wonder is to hike to the top of the falls.
Horse Shoe Falls are in the middle of a forest near Sabie, Mpumalanga, and are part of the waterfall route.
Lisbon Falls are situated in the heart of Mpumalanga’s waterfall area. Water from the Lisbon River gushes over the edge of the cliff at an awe-inspiring 92 meters into Lisbon Creek! This dramatic waterfall is the highest along the Panorama Route. Lisbon Falls are part of the waterfall route in Mpumalanga. They were named after the originating city of the pioneers that discovered them.
Berlin Falls, located on the Sabine River and situated a mere stone's throw from Lisbon Falls, tumbles down 80 meters! This single stream plunges down into a circular basin that is flanked by red cliffs. This creates a striking contrast, which guarantees incredible scenic sightings! Berlin Falls are part of the waterfall route in Mpumalanga. A clear mountain river breaks down on solid rock and plunges into a wonderful green lake.
Mac Mac Falls are one of the most spectacular waterfalls in South Africa. The thunderous sound and incredible sight of water crashing down a rock face denotes that you have arrived at Mac Mac Falls! The spectacular twin falls plunge down 65 meters into the Mac Mac River gorge. The waterfall can safely be viewed from a platform above the falls that is easily accessible. The Mac Mac Falls are part of the waterfall route in Mpumalanga South Africa which I visited. These waterfalls were found by the pioneers in this area.

The falls were once a single stream. During the gold rush, gold miners blasted the stream in an attempt to reach the rich gold-bearing reef.
Other notable waterfalls in South Africa
Augrabies Falls are a central feature of the Augrabies Falls National Park in the Northern Cape. There are few waterfall sights that are as sound deafening as the majestic Augrabies Falls, which thunders down an impressive 56m into a series of rock pools. Oh, and Augrabies is such an impressive waterfall that it beats Niagara’s annual average flow four times over!
Tugela Falls is located in the Royal Natal National Park in KwaZulu Natal. Forming part of the Tugela River, it is ranked amongst the highest in the world. This breathtaking waterfall boasts awe-inspiring views of the iconic Drakensberg Mountain range! There are 5 distinct free leaping falls that cascade over the enormous cliffs of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre.
There are two trails to Tugela Falls. The Tugela Falls hiking trail will take you to the source of the falls where you can experience the falls from the top. This is actually VERY easy to do, as the falls are within the ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK, administered by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and you can stay in the camp TENDELE in the park.
Another trail to the foot of Tugela Falls starts at Royal Natal National Park. The easy 7 km (4.3 mi) gradient up the Tugela Gorge winds through indigenous forests. The last part of the hike to Tugela Falls is a boulder hop.

Howick Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in South Africa. The falls also have an air of mythology around them. According to local legend, a mermaid called Eporia lives here, and her home is at the bottom of the waterfall.
Magwa Falls are best accessed by spending a night in Port St. Johns. To get to this viewpoint, follow the road to the parking area and walk towards the falls. I’d highly recommend getting a guide and carving out time to explore the nearby Mfihlelo Falls.
Meiringspoort Waterfall is about 12km from the town and is hidden inside a deep ravine. Spend a night or two at the spectacular Solace Cabin, and bring a good pair of hiking boots. It’s a two-hour trek to the falls with a trail that’s hard on the knees. Expect to climb over giant boulders as you follow the stream to the falls.
Witportjie Waterfall is inside the gardens, you’ll find the Witportjie Waterfall - one of the most impressive waterfalls in Gauteng.
