Discovering the Charm and History of The Last Word Long Beach, South Africa

If you seek a Long Beach luxury boutique hotel promising breathtaking moments and soul awakening experiences, look no further. What began with the conversion of a beachfront family home into the coastal-inspired Last Word Long Beach has become a covetable collection of boutique properties that are garnering increasing attention for their approach to providing a stylish home-away-from-home that connects you to the hotel’s locale. Last Word Long Beach has just celebrated its 20th year.

Perched on the dunes of Kommetjie’s famed Long Beach in Cape Town’s southern peninsula, Last Word Long Beach feels like it might be Cape Town’s best-kept secret. This understated beachfront hotel is an absolute gem in the Deep South, offering a true seaside escape within easy reach of all that the city has to offer. In a word? Location.

None would argue that Cape Town is the beauty spot on the African continent and, in an endeavour to share the city’s unique features with guests The Last Word has extended its horizons to include Racontours to help visitors uncover Cape Town’s precious gems. This is a one-of-kind opportunity to engage with nature.

The Last Word portfolio also includes Racontours, a touring outfit which offers bespoke, private tours to Cape Town’s four major tourist attractions. Racontours presents an opportunity to discover intimate aspects of Cape Town most visitors never get to see. The Strandlooper Safari uncovers the rich diversity of marine life along the Cape’s living shores while The Fynbos Explorer reveals Table Mountain’s colourful indigenous flora for which the Cape is world renown.

The Last Word Long Beach on the sea front in Kommetjie is about an hour from the city centre. If you’ve been to Cape Town before and want to discover a different side of the city, or are looking to bookend your Cape exploring with a few days of R&R, look no further. And for locals looking for a staycation close to the city, it’s perfect.

The view is framed by superb vistas of Table Mountain National Park, and if you look closely, you can see clear across to the Upper Cableway station. From the comfort of each spacious room, enjoy endless views of the Atlantic Ocean ahead and the Chapman's Peak mountains beyond.

Accommodation and Ambiance

All six elegantly appointed sea-facing rooms in our beachfront boutique hotel embrace the restful, marine-inspired décor. All six elegant en-suite bedrooms are sea facing. Our elegant, spacious Superior Rooms, Elegant Suites and singular Junior Suite provide our guests with the perfect destination for a romantic escapade, fresh-air family bonding or surfing safari with friends. Special occasions invite run-of-house bookings for a sublime experience of this shoreline paradise belonging only to you.

Step indoors, and that homely feel quickly puts you at ease. The upper floor is mainly dedicated to communal space, with a cosy lounge and adjoining dining area. And because there are only six rooms, the hotel never feels crowded. Chances are you’ll end up getting to know fellow guests, whether it’s around the pool or admiring the sunset on the fantastic terrace. All six rooms and suites at Last Word Long Beach are sea-facing, decorated in a breezy coastal motif - think a soothing neutral palette, handmade ceramics and woven rugs - and are designed for lazy seaside days.

So yes, there are on going changes - nothing structural at The Last Word Long Beach; we still have six luxury en-suite rooms, all ocean facing - but in the next short while return guests will notice a change in the décor. The theme is stylish, gracious and quietly enchanting - in keeping with the intimacy for which we have become renowned. We have layered and textured the interior with fabrics in subtle greens, greys, metallics and lots of white. A signature floral is used in certain areas to reinforce the garden theme. The result is a serene and tranquil effect that is sumptuously elegant yet comfortably homely.

Dining and Unique Experiences

Our resort-style experience includes most meals and beverages for guests' enjoyment; our seafood dinner is a highlight. Not a fan of seafood? Our chefs are on hand to whip up a delicious alternative, made to your liking. There are plenty of creature comforts befitting this five-star property, from the well-stocked minibar and snack station to the espresso and tea setup and fast Wi-Fi.

In sync with the laid-back setting, the staff here were warm and welcoming from arrival to farewell. Breakfast is suitably relaxed, served from 8am to 10am, with a private continental buffet on the table and a menu of larger plates if you’re hungry. Come evening, the hotel has a well-earned reputation for seafood, and the à la carte menu (again, usually included in the rate) ranges from line fish of the day to delicious West Coast mussels in a fragrant Thai-style cream. Along with included meals, another plus is the extensive honesty bar included in the rate. It means you can kick back with an afternoon G&T or an evening whisky without fretting about the cost.

Activities and Attractions

The hotel itself is pretty compact, so beyond enjoying the view, booking an in-room spa treatment or taking a dip in the pool, there’s not much in the way of activities on-site. But there’s no end of things to do right on the doorstep. Leisurely walks or horse riding along the eight kilometre stretch of beach, and nature trails in the mountains, are among the activities the area offers. For those who revel in history Slangkoppunt Lighthouse is a site dating back to 1914. Borrow a bike and explore the quiet streets of Kommetjie, from the Slangkop lighthouse to epic coastal rides along the Atlantic.

For those who want to stay in longer a wetsuit is required. In the heat of summer, under the African sun, the sea offers a refreshing body surf. The perfect wave! You’ll find it here and for the non-surfer there’s a perfect stretch of pure white sand with crystal-clear blue water lapping the shore. This is an un-crowded beach with water temperatures of 9 - 12 degrees C. Long Beach accommodates a range of suffers and there is so much space that you can find your own peak on most days.

Noordhoek Farm Village is also close by (15-minute drive) for coffee, craft and dining at The Foodbarn, while Cape Point Vineyards is worth a visit for a sip of coastal Sauvignon Blanc. You’ll find it here and for the non-surfer there’s a perfect stretch of pure white sand with crystal-clear blue water lapping the shore. This is an un-crowded beach with water temperatures of 9 - 12 degrees C.

Surfing is hugely popular in the Deep South, and Long Beach is an iconic city break. Board hire and lessons can easily be arranged. The outside at Long Beach (“Inner Kom”) provides the perfect wave for the young, less experienced and less fanatical riders while “Outer Kom” and Sunset Reef is perfect for the Big Wave fanatics, adrenaline junkies and the professionals.
