Planting and Care Tips

Get the best possible flower power from this fuss-free Rose with a sunny spot, well-drained soil, and good airflow. Ensuring the soil is enriched and well-drained to enjoy the best performance is important. Regular water and Rose fertilizer should be applied on a schedule. Provide a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch around the plant without letting it touch the stems.

Roses need a protected location and prefer full sun, favoring the drying power of the morning sun. Roses flower best in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. You can plant Roses any time if you are able to provide enough consistent moisture and attention. While there is not a specific month that is best, generally because it changes with temperatures, climate and growing zone.

Optimal Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun for best color and blooms.
  • Soil: Adaptable to any well-drained soil. Amend heavy clay soils with organic compost.
  • Watering: Water deeply 1 to 2 times per week during establishment, then allow the soil to dry before watering. Provide about one inch of water a week, avoiding getting the foliage wet.
  • Fertilizing: Use a slow-release fertilizer when planting and in spring.

How To Prune Roses With Tanya Visser

In early spring, start fresh by pruning all the canes down to six inches in early spring, cutting at a 45-degree angle above a nice, fat bud. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.

How to Use South Africa® Rose in Your Landscape

Use South Africa® Rose in many ways around your property, and you'll tie your landscape design together in a lively ribbon of color! Reimagine the south side of your mature evergreens with a mass planting of pretty apricot hues. Create a raised bed to make it easy to plant and maintain your collection! In the city, plant your Rose South Africa® Sunbelt® in patio containers to decorate your terrace, porch, or balcony! Courtyards and modern sized-lots gain a bright sunspot of color without sacrificing space! Create a garden feature to turn a wide, open space from "ho-hum" to dazzling!

Shrub roses are the backbone of a cottage garden but also attract pollinators when planted in a kitchen garden. The compact shape and ease of care for South Africa® make it well suited to grow in containers on a deck, patio, or poolside. Roses are easier to care for than most gardeners realize and make for low-maintenance hedging along a fenceline.

Growing a Rose Tree in Containers

Choose a pot a size larger than the pot your rose tree comes in. A 5 gallon pot is a good option that offers plenty of space without going too big and causing problems for your tree. A standard 5 gallon pot is about 12 inches in diameter and 11 inches tall. Be sure the pot drains well.

Use a good quality potting mix like our Special Planting Mix when planting in containers. You will need to check on your rose tree more often when it is planted in a pot as the soil will dry out faster. Test the soil by sticking your finger in about 2 inches to test the moisture. When the planting medium feels dry to the touch go ahead and water your rose tree deeply with a hose right on the soil.

Fertilize at least twice a year with our slow release fertilizer.
