Sangha Lodge: A Guide to Gorilla Tracking in the Central African Republic

Tracking Western Lowland Gorillas in Dzangha-Sangha

Visiting western lowland gorillas in Dzangha-Sangha is generally less strenuous compared to tracking their mountain cousins. You will be tracking one of two groups that live in and around Bai Hokou, a mineral-rich clearing enveloped by dense jungle.

The terrain in this area is much flatter than in places like Uganda and Rwanda. Typically, you'll be trekking for about 30 minutes to two hours to locate the habituated family. While the trek itself is relatively short, remember that you're in a pristine, equatorial rainforest. The heat and humidity can be challenging, so preparation is key.

What to Wear and Bring

To make your gorilla tracking experience more comfortable and safe, consider the following:

  • Footwear: Wear good walking shoes to navigate the terrain.
  • Clothing: Opt for a light, long-sleeved shirt and trousers to protect against insects and vegetation.

Respecting the Gorillas: When you reach the habituated group, you must maintain a distance of at least seven meters. This is crucial to prevent the transmission of diseases between humans and gorillas. Even a common cold can have severe consequences for these animals.

For the gorillas' safety, you are not allowed to track them if you are feeling ill. During your visit, you'll have a maximum of one hour to observe the gorillas. This time will pass quickly, so remember to occasionally put down your camera and simply enjoy the magical experience of sharing their space.

Being habituated, the gorillas are generally undisturbed by human presence. They will continue their natural behaviors, such as playing, foraging, socializing, and relaxing, allowing you to witness their daily lives up close.
