Polytechnics play a vital role in the educational, scientific, and technological progress of Nigeria. They are established to train and produce the technical manpower necessary for the execution of the Nation’s development plans, goals, and strategies.
This is a role which they have effectively played since the establishment of the first polytechnic, Yaba College of Technology, in 1947. The 72 existing and growing polytechnics in Nigeria, currently made up of 22 federal, 38 State and 12 privately owned polytechnics, offer courses in the arts, sciences, technology and engineering disciplines.
The polytechnics are under the purview of the National Board for Technical Education. This Board, the NBTE, established by law (National Board for Technical Education Act 9 of January 1977) approves the setting up of each polytechnic, regulates the courses, and also sets the minimum standards on admission, teaching and infrastructure.
Admission into a polytechnic is through applying and writing the Universal Matriculation Tertiary Examination (UMTE) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB). Please see the menu ADMISSION REQUIRMENTS for requirements to be admitted to the polytechnics.
Structure of Polytechnics
Each polytechnic is organized into schools or colleges (sometimes also called faculties) and departments. A school is made up of courses or disciples of same root and is headed by a Director of Studies (and sometimes Dean). For instance, the School of Technology at the Yaba College of Technology is made up four (4) courses and departments.

A Department is a course of study, for instance, Accountancy, and is generally headed by a Head of Department (HOD). Each of the polytechnics also has what is known as Academic Board. This serves as the administrative council and is headed by the Rector.
The head of each polytechnic is known as Rector. Each polytechnic often have an eminent person from the society who plays the role of Chairman of the institution. He is called Chairman of the Governing Council.
Such individuals are often not from the academia but may be a technocrat, a traditional ruler or a diplomat and are appointed by the Government in the case of government polytechnics. The governing council is generally made up of the Chairman, the Rector, the representative of NBTE, the Registrar, the representative of the ministry of education and other members.
This council serves as the policy and oversight body of the institution. They may also have a visitor. This is the proprietor of the school. In the case of Federal polytechnics the visitor is the President; Governor in the case of State owned polytechnics and the Owner in the case of privately owned polytechnics.
Academic Programs and Structure
The polytechnics offer a two-year course of study leading to the award of the National Diploma (ND). After this, students are expected to go for a one-year industrial attachment to enable them acquire requisite on-the-job and practical experience before proceeding to the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme.

The HND programme also runs for two years. At the end of the HND programme, successful candidates proceed to the one year mandatory National Youth Service Corp scheme.
To assist desiring individuals who for one reason or the other could not make it into the regular programme, most of the polytechnics run part-time programmes. These part-time programmes take three years to complete each of the normal two-year duration.
