A police clearance certificate, also called a police character clearance (PCC), is an official document issued by the Nigerian police to persons who have lived in Nigeria for a particular period and detailing the records of such an individual. It is issued to attest that the person has or does not have any criminal record in Nigeria.

The certificate provides details for your criminal details; it shows your criminal records, whether or not you have been previously convicted for a crime in Nigeria. And if you have never been convicted for any crime in Nigeria, the document will serve as evidence that you don't have any criminal record in Nigeria.

Even as a tourist to another country, you will need a police character certificate. It is needed to gain entry into another country, particularly if you are an immigration applicant you will have to provide it to show that you don’t have any criminal record back in your country.

Application Process

The application for the PCC can be obtained at the nearest police station. However, the Nigerian police recently designed a platform for processing the applications online.

You can apply after downloading the form on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) dedicated portal for character certificate and take it to your state police command.

Validity

Generally, the PCC is valid for 3 months. Ecuador authority recognises police certificate for three months just like Nigeria (as of 2 March 2012).

Requirements

As stated earlier, one of the requirements for a PCC application is NIN or BVN. If you are in Nigeria, you can get your NIN or BVN at various registration centres or within the banking halls. However, if you are abroad and you need to get PCC, you are also required to have NIN or BVN. If you don’t have one, there are various NIN and BVN enrolment centres abroad.

It can’t be done by proxy. Even by using the third party service, you will still have to take your own fingerprint (clearly taken), scan and forward it, which will be analysed by a forensic expert back here in Nigeria.

Cost

So far, the Cost of Police Clearance Certificate, according to reports we received from those who have done it, gave us these prices: N3,500, N5,000, N8,500 and we have also seen people got it for more than N30, 000. At the moment, due to the declining exchange rate of the naira, the cost has been increased to N90,000.

Processing Time

If you are applying from your state command, you may have to wait between 5-7 days because it will still be passed to the Criminal registry office in Lagos.

If you are applying by yourself or through a third party, it could take between 14 to 21 days for you to get it.

It has been simplified, you do not have to travel to Criminal Registry in Lagos to get it.

Transferability

It is not transferable. You cannot use someone else's police certificate. You must obtain your own.

NIN and BVN Enrolment Centres Abroad

If you are abroad and need to obtain a PCC, you may need to enroll for NIN or BVN at designated centers. Here is a list of some of the enrolment centers:
