According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics National Population Census 2024, Mukono's population has seen a drastic increase and now stands at 929,224 residents and 273,966 households. Mukono District is currently one of the fastest growing Districts in Uganda. The northern part of the district is flat and gently laying but going down south there are sloping lands with many undulations; 75% of the land is less than 60o in slope.Youth Population
Mukono South’s highest population by age is 0 - 17 years, standing at 51.8% (70,754), closely followed by 18-30 year group at 23.4% (31,986). This means that 75.2% of people in Mukono South are below the age of 30 years.Education

Mukono is a great place to stay if you want to explore Uganda’s fascinating capital- Kampala, and the adventure capital of Uganda- Jinja. Mukono and Kayunga aren’t usually the first stop, or even the fourth. Mukono boasts of several natural and cultural attractions, making it an ideal destination for tourists seeking diverse experiences.- Mabira Forest Reserve: Mabira forest reserve is found about 30 kilometers from Mukono town, along the Jinja-Kampala highway. Part of the forest reserve is developed into an eco-tourism center, comprising trails, a campsite, and Bandas. Mabira forest is also popular for it’s for its rich 312 flora. It is located on a 306 square km of land. It was first gazette in 19932 as a forest reserve. Mabira has 9 species of birds which are endemic to these features alone. The forest is ideal for bird seeing, cycling, camping, forest walks and education supports among others. The key attraction at the reserves include mountain/forest biking walks. As a tropical rain forest, it is an ideal venue for more touring activities like cycling, camping, forest walks and education supports among others.
- Ssezibwa Falls: Both falls are found in the Mukono district, north of Mukono town. Ssezibwa falls are uniquely characterized by black waters and are about 4 meters high. The falls are popular with excursionists for the nearby campsites. The Ssezibwa Falls located 35km east of Kampala in Mukono district is about seven meters high with the sweet hissing sound created by the falling water. The falls have a cultural and traditional bearing in the region and on the Baganda in particular due to the myths behind the formation of the Ssezibwa River. The Sezibwa Falls are 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) off the Kampala-Jinja Highway, 19 kilometres (12 mi) east of the town of Mukono. The site also has a natural forest reserve, which has forest trails and nature walkways for birdwatching and forest exploration. The Sezibwa Falls are also a cultural site of the Baganda and have cultural artifacts, including caves, 100-year-old trees, and special rocks of deep cultural significance to the Baganda of Buganda in central Uganda.
- Kalagala Falls: Kalagala falls have been identified as a national project for development into a modern nature-based tourism center.
- Buvuma Islands: Buvuma Islands are located in the Lake Victoria areas of Mukono district south of the source of the Nile in Jinja district. The Islands form an administrative County comprising the main Buvuma Island and about thirty smaller Islands. The important potential tourism attractions of the Islands include birds, sand beaches, forest reserves, caves, and crocodiles.
- Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary: Imagine a pristine East African 100 acre rain forest surrounded by peaceful waters, where you can experience the wonders of mankind the chimpanzees. The sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to watch and learn about chimpanzees and over 120 bird species as otters monitor around its shores. Ngamba Island is located in Mukono district, in Lake Victoria, south-east of Entebbe town. The Island is a forest reserve developed as a chimpanzee sanctuary. The infrastructure on the Island includes rest shelters and bandas. Ngamba is one of the Koome islands, 23km from Entebbe and south of the Equator in Mukono district. It’s approximately around one and half hours’ drive on a traditional motorized boat and faster on a speed boat from Mukono main land or Entebbe.
- Source of the Nile: The rive Nile is one of the longest rivers in the world, makes its source a major tourist point of visit. Activities in the local craft shops, restaurants among others are also available to visitors, with fascinating boat trips to the actual spot of the source to physical notice the difference between the Lake and the start of the River. At the spot also is the site for the Rippon falls and two special monuments there.
- Cultural Sites: Caves do provide an extraordinary diversity of creation to visitors. In Mukono, there are a number of caves in different areas though some cannot simply be visited due to cultural attachments. The cultural rocks here in Mukono district, are mainly natural features. However they have carried a lot cultural back ground for the Buganda Kingdom. Different features connected to the cultural beliefs like fire (stove) places Alters of prayers, springs of water, spears, back cloth, animal skin and many others with respective specifically assigned cultural keepers stationed at these places like Dindo and Kasawo in Jjumba hills.
Other Activities and Attractions
Other activities in Mukono include many different types of residential or commercial scale activities. These include among many, brick making, road side markets, artistic products and other activities among others. The products are mainly lined at the main road giving a huge market to traveling tourists and a chance to participate in the activities.

Infrastructure and Accessibility
All modes of transport can be used in Mukono district. The 5th largest district in Uganda is networked tarmac and murrum roads as the major mode of transport. Water transport is still maintained to the islands mainly due to the varsity presence of Lake Victoria waters. It has then been easy to move from places as to locate these attractions which are widely distributed in this district. 4×4 and air conditioned vehicles are encouraged and these services can as well be available by county’s tour operators.
Accommodation is the major factor in travel and tourism. They are all in accessible places. The bandas or cottages are located in major tourist visited areas like Mabira forest to modern classic hotels especially in urban centres.
Mukono Town
Mukono Town is a municipality in Mukono District in the Central Region of Uganda. The town is administered by the Mukono Town Council. Mukono is one of Uganda's fastest growing urban areas. Mukono Municipality administration is divided into (a) the political arm headed by the Mayor, (b) the technical arm headed by the Town Clerk and the legislative arm, headed by the Speaker of the town council. The council is the supreme policy-making organ in the town. It is composed of 26 elected councilors. The mayor of the town is elected to a five-year term by universal adult suffrage using a secret ballot.

The town of Mukono is about 21 kilometres (13 mi) by road, east of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda along the Kampala-Jinja Highway.
Youth Rising Initiative
Youth Rising launched operations at a second location in a small village in Mukono District. The opportunity to extend services to rural Mukono South is very important. As Youth Rising launches its center, it commits itself to offering vocational training for youth, community health support and livelihoods education.
The center will commence with U Rise Health & Wellness Center to engage Mukono South Community through provision youth health friendly services and community based health services. Youth Rising is also starting a vocational training program with three courses: Catering & Culinary Arts, Fashion & Design, and Small Enterprise Development, a program that will include training in financial literacy. Finally, Youth Rising is also launching a women livelihood support group. About 30 women have already started training in basket weaving and will be exhibiting their products at the launch.
As Youth Rising gets its boots on ground, they are looking for monetary and in-kind donations to boost their programs.
