Michael Palin in Nigeria is a television travel documentary presented by Michael Palin, which first aired in the UK in three parts on Channel 5 on 16, 23, and 30 April 2024. This gripping series follows broadcaster and writer Michael Palin's 1,300-mile journey across Nigeria - a country characterised by contrasting extremes but one of stunning natural beauty and welcoming people.
A Journey of Discovery
The documentary captures Palin's empathetic and gentle approach as he explores Nigeria. Watching him recount his experiences and rake through his archives is deeply pleasant and a nice reminder of how empathetic, gentle and lovely his travelogues were. The series, written by Michael Palin himself, offers viewers a chance to gain new insights from him about certain moments.
Throughout his journey, Palin confronts significant historical and cultural aspects of Nigeria, including the uncomfortable topic of slavery. His interactions with the local population highlight the beauty of the country and the warmth of its people.
Behind the Scenes and Reflections
The series also incorporates behind-the-scenes footage and personal recordings, providing a comprehensive look at Palin's travels. This show gives a bit of behind the scenes but it's mostly Michael recollecting. Old Michael is still very charming. Comedic actor Michael Palin recounts five of his travel TV shows starting with the great Around the World in 80 Days and then Pole to Pole, Full Circle, Sahara, and Himalaya.
While the primary focus remains on Palin's experiences, the documentary also features commentary from other travel show hosts, reflecting on how Michael inspired them and changed the nature of the travel show. One thing that this show definitely did is that it got me to watch again a couple of those shows, and watch the Sahara and Himalaya for the first time.

Critical Reception
The documentary has garnered attention for Palin's engaging storytelling and the rich content it provides. However, some critics noted that the inclusion of random commentators detracted from Palin's own narrative. I could personally have done without so many random people popping up to comment, who just seemed to be taking time away from Palin himself, who was the person that we were all there to see, but I would struggle to knock a star off for that because there is so much great content in these shows.
Despite mixed opinions on the additional commentary, the series is largely appreciated for its insightful exploration of Nigeria and Palin's unique perspective. This isn't to discredit the talking heads - you've got Attenborough fer chrissakes but a second of him and like, fifteen solid minutes with one of Derry Girls earnestly describing things you've just seen seems off.
