Unexpected Bonds: The Friendship of Chad Michael Murray and Jared Padalecki

It turns out that two former Gilmore Girls co-stars are friends in real life, years after they shared the screen.

They may have played sworn enemies on the series, but Chad Michael Murray and Jared Padalecki are friends in real-life.

Murray revealed the friendship on The IMDB Show when asked which of his previous co-stars out of Hilary Duff (A Cinderella Story), Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls), Milo Ventimiglia (Chosen and Gilmore Girls), and Padalecki (Gilmore Girls and House of Wax) knows the biggest secret about him.

When Murray chose Padalecki he clarified his answer by saying, "We worked together for, gosh, like two, three years. We went straight from Gilmore [Girls] and then went into House of Wax later on. We were roommates in House of Wax. Late nights, you got nothing to do and you're sitting there just spitting out all your truths."

Apparently this bond runs deep, because when Murray was also asked which of those four former co-stars he would still be friends with when he was an 85-year-old, Murray also opted for Padalecki.

He told IMDB Show host Tim Kash that the two had a lot in common, outside of working on two projects together. "We could talk forever," Murray said to Kash. "Countless hours. And we just created a brotherhood because we both came up together."

Fans will most famously remember the pair playing adversaries for Rory's heart on Gilmore Girls.

For those who haven't done a recent re-watch (which you should do immediately) Murray played Tristan, a popular boy at Rory's school, Chilton, who had a thing for her and showed it by weirdly calling her "Mary."

Things were even more complicated by the fact that Rory's ultimate frenemy Paris was nursing a major crush for Tristan.

Padalecki, of course, played Rory's first love, Dean.

Dean and Tristan never were the best of friends onscreen, but things became the most heated in a Season 1 episode when Rory goes to Chilton's winter formal.

Dean comes as Rory's date.

Tristan intervenes and a heated fight ensues.

It becomes one of the most legendary Season 1 moments, and apparently led to an unconventional off-screen friendship?!

It honestly makes weird sense that Murray and Padalecki would have become friends, especially considering they both have starred on some seriously iconic shows.

Padalecki went on to star on the CW's Supernatural , which is ending after 15 seasons, while Murray went from one teen drama to the next in One Tree Hill and now CW's Riverdale.

Maybe the two trade stories about being considered teen heartthrobs of the early 2000s?

Or they could commiserate over the not reuniting onscreen for the 2016 Gilmore Girls revival. (We're still processing our feelings about the Logan-centered storyline, too.)

No matter what brought these two actors together, or what secrets Padalecki is seemingly keeping about Murray, this friendship is bringing major Gilmore Girls nostalgia to the forefront.

Gilmore Girl fans will remember Chad as Tristan, the bad boy from Chilton who crushed hard on Rory.

According to Chad, it was his first reoccurring TV role, and a formative one at that.

“I believe that was my first recurring role on television. And so, you know, for me, I was really just getting accustomed to the world.

“These fight sequences where you’re such a jerk, and Jared is like, the sweetest guy in the whole wide world. We get along so well.

Chad also gushed about star Alexis Bledel, who he praised for both her acting skills and her professionalism.

“She just was so committed to Rory. Alexis was awesome. She was on it. She’s the one who added to the majority of my scenes what’s right.

But despite his short stint on the series, Chad insists that he formed lifelong friendships.

“I created great long-term friendships with Jared Padalecki and Milo Ventimiglia back in the day.

Since leaving Gilmore Girls in 2001, he’s starred in teen movies Freaky Friday (2003) with Lindsay Lohan and A Cinderella Story (2004) with Hilary Duff.

Chad Michael Murray’s latest project is the Hallmark movie Sand Dollar Cove, in which he stars opposite Aly Michalka (iZombie).

As divided as Gen Z can get, one thing unites us all: the early 2000s had some great celebrity crushes.

Thanks to rom-coms and teen dramas, we got cuties like Dylan Sprouse and Taylor Lautner (not to mention all of The Sex and the City boyfriends).

However, no crush conversation gets as heated as talking about Rory Gilmore's boyfriends.

Thankfully, the drama between the characters didn't translate in real life, and as it turns out, two of them were up for the same iconic role.

Keep reading to find out which Gilmore Girls costar almost landed Chad Michael Murray's Freaky Friday character Jake.

Freaky Friday cast

In Disney's 2003 Freaky Friday, which was led by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan and based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel, Chad Michael Murray (who starred as Tristan before he joined One Tree Hill) plays music lover Jake.

However, the role was almost played by Jared Padalecki instead.

“I went through the typical casting process," he tells Vulture. "I was reading with a bunch of guys. I know one of them was Jared Padalecki. We were buddies and goofed off before the audition."

Since Jared went on to be a lead on Supernatural, this casting choice worked out for everyone!

Chad later recalled that director Mark Waters knew he'd be a fit for the role right from the beginning: "He told me, ‘It’s funny. I knew right away from the moment that you started acting in the scene with Lindsay. I could tell just from her reaction to you being in the room.'"

Considering Freakier Friday hits theaters this weekend, we get to see Chad Michael Murray reprise his role!

"It would be awesome to come back and have Jake come in and reenter the world of mayhem," Chad continued in the interview at the time.

"It would only be that much more interesting having Jamie potentially play a grandma or Lindsay playing a mother and Jake entering that world in some weird, bizarre way...I'd be all in."

We're all in too, Chad. We're all in, too.

Jared Tristan Padalecki is an American actor and starred as the protagonist Sam Winchester in The CW show Supernatural with fellow Texan Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester who plays his brother.

The story follows the two as they cross the country hunting monsters.

In addition to Sam, Jared has also played other characters, most of whom use his body.

In Season 2, Jared played Meg for an episode.

In Season 5 Jared also played Lucifer in episodes 4 and 22, and Gary Frankle in episode 12.
