Amidst alarming reports of thousands of people, particularly Black women, going missing, comes a poignant true story brought to life on screen: Abducted Off The Street: The Carlesha Gaither Story.

The movie’s premiere comes at a time when the disparity in missing persons cases among Black communities is increasingly evident. There’s a little-discussed fact that roughly 100,000 Black women and girls are reported missing in the United States each year. Though Black people make up 13 percent of the U.S. population, they account for a staggering 37 percent of those reported missing. Abducted Off The Street: The Carlesha Gaither Story shines a light on these sobering statistics and underscores the importance of raising awareness about missing persons cases, particularly within marginalized communities.
Don’t miss this compelling and thought-provoking premiere on Lifetime, as Abducted Off The Street: The Carlesha Gaither Story unfolds on Saturday, February 10th.
The Story of Carlesha Gaither
The movie unfolds with the gripping tale of Philadelphia nurse Carlesha, portrayed by Riele Downs. Carlesha’s life takes a terrifying turn as she is forcibly abducted off the street while walking home from a family gathering. Faced with a knife-wielding captor, Carlesha’s determination to survive leads her to leave behind crucial clues at every opportunity, including her cell phone.

Kenya Moore's Perspective
For those Real Housewives fans still wondering which high-profile film projects Kenya Moore has been a part of, look no further. Based upon a true story, written by Amani Walker and directed by Katie Boland, Abducted Off The Street: The Carlesha Gaither Story sheds light on the harrowing experiences faced by many Black women who go missing. The movie, based on a true story, follows a mother searching tirelessly for her daughter, who was abducted off the street in Philadelphia.
“When I first read the script, I had to put it down after the first 10 pages. I thought, I don’t know if I can do this,” Moore says. Moore has also appeared for more than a decade on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, but for this project, she left the reality glamour and catfights behind. “This is not any Real Housewives show,” she says, noting the role required her to think about “what it might be like if something [similar] happened to me or someone in my family.
“It was scary, I’m not gonna lie. It was scary because it’s one of your worst fears. So you don’t want to have to come to the realization that this could possibly happen one day,” she said. For Kenya, who grew up in Detroit with her grandmother, she “learned early on” about being mindful of her surroundings.
Carlesha had been walking home when she was snatched off the street and pushed into a vehicle, then held hostage for nearly three days by a man who’d kidnapped before. We see Keisha forcefully handing out flyers, and she insists police hold a press conference and put the family on camera, where she pleads for the public’s help. One line in particular resonated with Moore: “Keisha says, ‘You know how people like Carlesha get found?

Personal Safety and Awareness
“I have had security experts come to my house and assess my house,” she revealed. “I carry a gun [because] several years ago, you probably saw me brandishing my gun at some people. They knocked at my door, and I’m like, ‘No, I don’t play that. You don’t understand. I don’t know why you are trespassing. Kenya isn’t the only Real Housewives star who’s faced unwanted visitors. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Kyle Richards and Dorit Kemsley also experienced burglaries during filming.
“You never see me being flashy about jewelry,” Kenya said. “I recycle clothes [and] may have one expensive car, but they can take a car. I don’t care about material things,” she added before sharing, “The most expensive thing in my house is my refrigerator. That appliance package is off the chain in my house!
