Lake Elementaita, another of Kenya’s alkaline lakes, lies between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. Set within the eastern portion of the Rift Valley, the lake was produced approximately 12 million years ago, and today much of the lake is part of the private Soysambu Conservancy.

Lake Elementaita is a Wildlife Sanctuary and UNESCO heritage site in Kenya’s Rift Valley. It is also a Ramsar site (wetland of international importance). Lake Elementaita is a protected area due to its bird life and its of global significance for bird and biodiversity conservation. It’s a famous safari destination for wildlife, bird watching, and bird photography in Kenya.

Much of your activity-enriched trip to Kenya’s Lake Elementaita takes place within the 48,000-acre conservancy that serves as a sanctuary for nationally threatened colobus monkeys, endangered Rothschild giraffes, elusive predators, plains game, avifauna and many other species. The varied terrain offers volcanic hills, acacia woodlands, grassy plains, and stands of Warburgia fever trees and Euphorbia candelabra.

Although the lake region has fewer mammalian species than other areas in East Africa, more than 15,000 animals roam the conservancy property. You may see Rothschild giraffes amongst the acacia trees removing tender leaves from branches while adeptly avoiding the treacherous thorns. Many species of plains game are commonly sighted, and you may have a fortuitous experience of sighting steinboks, duikers, bush pigs, bushbucks and also other elusive fauna. Lake Elementaita is also home to the tufted-eared caracal, golden and striped jackals, and other smaller predators.

Like other alkaline lakes, the ecology of Elementaita is greatly influenced by rain and water levels. Specific conditions must be maintained, or the levels of algae, fish, and invertebrates decline. When the abundance of these food sources declines, birds and other species prefer other Kenyan soda lakes where food is easier to locate. As a result, the number of flamingos and pelicans fluctuates. Even in less-than-optimum conditions, though, the lake is a paradise for bird lovers, offering more than 450 species, including migratory birds from Europe and other locations.

Lake Elementaita is home to 450 species of birds, including greater and lesser flamingos and many migratory birds. The habitats support the conservation of herbivores and Carnivores such as giraffes, Buffaloes, Leopards, and hyenas. Best Time to Visit Lake Elementaita

The best time to visit Lake Elementaita is during the dry season, which runs from July to October and January to February. If you plan to conduct many outdoor activities, this is the best time to go. April is especially great for birdwatching and migratory species such as flamingos. However, Lake Elementaita Wildlife Sanctuary is a pleasant destination throughout the year.

Note that the sanctuary has two rainy seasons: April to June (long rains) and November to December (short rains).

How to Get to Lake Elementaita

By Road: Lake Elementaita can be accessed by the Trans-African Highway (A104). The park is approximately 74.56 miles (120km) north of Nairobi.
By Air: Nakuru (Lanet) and Soysambu Airstrip are the nearest airstrips.

A Historic Legacy Preserved

The lodge dates back to about a century ago when it was built by one of Kenya’s first Colonial Lords called Galbraith Cole. Lord Galbraith was Lord Delamere’s Brother in law who had gone to fight in the South African Boers war of October 11, 1899, to May 31, 1902, between Great Britain and the two Boer (Afrikaner) republics. During the war, he got wounded and was confined into a wheelchair.

His Sister; who was married to Lord Delamere begged Lord Delamere to have his brother to come to Kenya and live with them instead of going back home to Europe. Lord Delamere agreed and gave him about 30 hectares of land from his 100 hectares in the Kikopey area. They agreed that Lord Cole will be given the land North of Jacaranda Lake Elementaita and they will retain the land south of Jacaranda Lake Elementaita extending all the way to Lake Nakuru.

During the time of his stay in Kenya, Lord Cole put up a farm with lots of agronomic activities going on. He lived there with his wife, children and farm workers. Fast forward to today, Jacaranda Hotels acquired the lodge and has preserved most of its original fixtures and fittings while adding a unique touch of hospitality to ensure maximum guest comfort and experience.

Lake Elementaita Lodge managed by Jacaranda Hotels group was formerly Kekopey ranch built by maintains the same features and atmosphere of an early colonial home, reel brick building with shady terraces. an internal courtyard, paneled walls and a sitting room with a library and log fire. The original building houses the hotel's social areas while 33 twin and double bedrooms, each with a private bathroom in newer ‘cottages' are nestled away in the lush expansive flowered garden behind the original main building.
