The resort welcomes tourists from across the world, including gorilla trekkers, lake loungers, mountain hikers, and bird watchers, as they immerse themselves in nature. Mutanda Lake Resort is perfectly positioned to be within striking distance of the gorilla treks at Nkuringo, Ruhija and Mgahinga in Uganda, and lies near the town of Kisoro. It is only 14 km from Kisoro town.

Lake Mutanda Resort offers comfortable accommodation combined with the most beautiful views on planet earth. Accommodation at Mutanda Lake Resort is provided in 13 beautifully crafted cottages with ensuite bathrooms.

The resort was furnished with 13 perfect en-suite cottage that come in single, double/twin, and triple/family rooms with comfortable beds and mosquito nets. Our cottages each come with private veranda and en-suite bathroom. The rooms are decorated with local art, fabric, and decor to give guests a sense of belonging. This is relaxed Dutch-owned resort having excellent luxury tents raised on wooden platforms with lovely porches and polished wooden floorboards.

Platform cabin style tents overlooking the lake, double beds with ensuite bathrooms which include flushing toilets, sink and shower, lighting and electrical outlets available when the generator is on. Clean basic lodging. Relaxing on the porch with a cold drink is just amazing.

The standard cottages are built on stilted platforms so that all have views over Lake Mutanda. Unpretentious and cosy, all have hot showers, a welcome treat after a day of trekking.

Services and Facilities

The resort is spaciously set up and stretches into Lake Mutanda. At Mutanda Lake Resort, you can expect to experience the best of African hospitality in a serene and tranquil environment.

  • Laundry Services: Laundry services is also provided at the lodge for guests staying two or more consecutive nights. Laundry services are available for guests at an additional fee. Laundry service can be provided, at a surcharge, for guests staying two or more consecutive nights. Laundry is hand washed and air dried, so the speed of drying is dependent upon the weather conditions.
  • Airport Transfers: The lodge arranges airport pick-up and drop-off services for tourists. The lodge can arrange pick-up services from Kabale/Lake Bunyonyi, Kisoro and Kigali, as well as transfers from the lodge to the starting points of the gorilla tracking, golden monkey tracking and volcano hikes. We would need to know at least one day in advance in order to arrange a transfer.
  • Gorilla Permits: The lodge assists clients in securing gorilla permits by partnering with a gorilla trekking agency. For the gorilla permits we would like to refer to our partner company, Gorilla Tracking Agency - www.gorillatrackingagency.com. The company is based in Kampala and run by Susan and Conrad.
  • Payment Options: The lodge accepts payments in US dollars, Euros, Ugandan shillings, and credit cards to facilitate easy payments for guests.
  • Internet Access: Free internet is available in the restaurant and rooms, allowing tourists to stay connected with loved ones. The lodge provides free wireless internet in the restaurant, enabling you to share your gorilla experiences with your friends back home. However, as we are located in a remote area, the connection strength can be poor at times, especially during the evenings. We kindly ask for your understanding.
  • Restaurant: The restaurant serves delicious meals prepared with herbs and vegetables from the lodge’s garden. The kitchen garden provides the restaurant with ample fresh produce from which to create meals suitable for a range of dietary requests. The restaurant resembles a Swiss chalet with an African touch.
  • Bar: The lodge has a well-stocked bar offering both soft and hard drinks.

Activities at Lake Mutanda

In addition to the captivating gorilla trekking experience, there are many other exciting activities to enjoy in and around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. At Mutanda Lake Resort, you can explore the local communities, peoples, and cultures by foot or hike through the misty impenetrable jungles.

  • Swimming: Swimming in the lake is one of the activities offered by the lodge. Swimming in the lake was one of our favourite things to do and the cozy restaurant was a great place to go warm up with a nice drink. On a hot day, tourists can enjoy swimming in the calm and fresh waters of Lake Mutanda, which provides a great sense of refreshment.
  • Gorilla Trekking: Gorilla trekking is what makes Bwindi the most visited national park and a leading destination worldwide for this activity. Gorilla trekking is an iconic activity done after briefing about gorilla rules. The park range guide, lead the trackers into forest trails to look for these unique apes. Mountain gorillas share almost 98% of human DNA and are very friendly creatures. Tourists will have a wonderful moment with these great apes in the wild.
  • Bird Watching: Bird watching in Bwindi is fantastic, as the forest is home to almost 350 bird species. Birders will also have a field day spotting grey-crowned cranes, sacred and hadeda ibises, and African spoonbills. Tourists can observe birds as they sing and fly among the trees.
  • Boat Riding: Enjoy the lake with its beautiful surrounding by motorized boat or canoes. The boat tour can be made 1 or 2 hours. This activity is one of the activities done by the guests who use this lodge for their overnight stay, since the lodge is located in few distance to access the Uganda Gorilla Destination. Boat riding allows tourists to explore various spots and paddle on the calm waters of Lake Mutanda. This activity offers stunning views of the lake from a different perspective, providing both enjoyment and relaxation.
  • Nature Walks: Visitors, along your visit at the resort can take part in a dive or relax from the dock and watch time go by, very slowly. The walk can start after a 30 minutes canoe ride, then walk along the swamp and up the hills. The walking experience offers amazing views over Lake Mutanda and the experience can take about 3 hours.

For a cultural experience, you can take a guided community walk in the Mukozi area. This walk includes a short boat or canoe ride to reach the village, followed by visits to important community sites. Depending on the day of the week, you may visit a local craft maker, meet a medicine man, or explore a local school or church. The walk allows you to interact with the villagers and learn about their traditions, beliefs, and daily activities.

For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, the Lake Mulehe hike is a great option. This hike combines a boat or canoe ride across Lake Mutanda with a scenic walk around the area. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of both Lake Mutanda and Lake Mulehe. The hike takes about six hours in total and is mostly uphill but not too challenging.

A visit to Mutanda Island is another great way to experience the area. You can take a boat or canoe ride to the island and explore its unique culture. The Abagesera people are welcoming, and you’ll have the chance to interact with them, visit their school and church, and learn about their way of life. Depending on your preference, you can choose to travel by canoe with a local captain or by motorboat. The canoe ride takes about three and a half to four hours, while the motorboat ride lasts around three hours.

Mutanda Lake Resort is a perfect base for gorilla trekking in Rushaga and Nkuringo Sectors. Mgahinga National Park is also just a 1.5-hour drive away. Many guests go to Mutanda to get away into the countryside and switch off from the energy-draining internet world.
