Kapchorwa District is located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, nestled on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Kapchorwa offers a unique blend of adventure and tranquility. The town of Kapchorwa serves as the district's main municipal, administrative, and commercial center, hosting the district headquarters. The district is bordered by Kween District to the northeast and east, Sironko District to the south, and Bulambuli District to the west and northeast.

Historical Overview
Under the colonial administration, Kapchorwa District was known as Sebei County, located in North Bugisu within the now-defunct Bukedi District. During independence, it was known as Sebei, and in 1980, it was renamed Kapchorwa.
Demographics and Culture
Kapchorwa District is primarily inhabited by Kalenjin peoples, including the Sabiny, Pokot, and Nandi sub-groups. Kapchorwa is home to the Sabiny people, who speak the Kupsabiny language, which is similar to the Sabaot language in Kenya. The Sabiny population in Uganda is about 337,000, mainly living in Kapchorwa, Bukwo, and Kween districts. The Sabiny make up around 90% of the population on Mount Elgon, while the Gisu (a Bantu tribe) form the remaining 10%. The Sabiny have an estimated population of 300,000. Among the Sabiny is the Mosopisiek, a subtribe numbering about 15,000, who were the original inhabitants of what is now Mount Elgon National Park.
The people of kapchorwa district are trying hard to live with their families by practicing subsistence agriculture. Extended families form the backbone of Sabiny society, with communal labor (kwera) being a cornerstone. The Sabiny people uphold a rich oral tradition, with elders passing down histories and moral lessons through storytelling. A distinctive custom is the male and female initiation ceremonies, particularly the circumcision rituals, which mark the transition to adulthood. Traditional attire includes sisal skirts and beaded jewelry for women, while men often wear tunics made from animal skins during ceremonies.

Population Growth
In 1991, the national population census estimated the district population at 48,700. The 2002 national census estimated the population at 74,300, with an annual growth rate of 4.5 percent. Kapchorwa is a real rural area of Uganda and the population is estimated to be over 104580, with a population growth rate of about 4.5%.
Kapchorwa's cultural calendar is punctuated by vibrant events. The Kapchorwa Cultural Festival, typically held in August, showcases the traditions of the Sabiny people, including music, dance, and the famed Imbalu circumcision ceremonies.
Economy and Agriculture
Subsistence agriculture is the main economic activity in Kapchorwa District. Agriculture with main emphasis on food crops such as millet, potatoes, beans, Simsim and sunflower. Cash crops like cotton, coffee and Wheat. The Sabiny are farmers. They grow crops such as coffee, maize, wheat, and beans, and they also rear cattle, goats, and chickens. The people in kapchorwa have practiced cattle keeping on a subsistence level during the 1960’s, however, the cattle raids by the karamajong people of northern Uganda, made the people of kapchorwa to try other means of getting food and a little income to support their families, such as small farming and poultry.
Education and Health
The district has a total of 111 primary schools with 83 government, 19 private and 9 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 22 schools, 8 are government, 2 private and 12 community. The district has 13 Government dispensaries (II), 12 health centres (III) at county, 1 health centre (IV) at sub-district with no hospital. More so, it has 2 private/NGO dispensaries, 3 clinics and 1 health centre (III) and no hospital. Kapchorwa is on the educational map too! A branch of Uganda Christian University (UCU) is set to open soon, and the district already hosts a branch of Makerere University Business School (MUBS). This makes Kapchorwa a growing hub for higher education in Eastern Uganda.
Tourism and Attractions
Kapchorwa district is among the districts which make up the safari circuit of eastern Uganda. The district has a beautiful, rugged landscape and its location is on the ranges of Mountain Elgon. The landscape is it major tourist attraction. Kapchorwa district has a lot of attractions that you will love to see, despite the fact that it is in the shadow of mbale district.

Sipi Falls
Sipi Falls
Kapchorwa is best known for the spectacular Sipi Falls, but there’s so much more to explore. Sipi falls is another attraction in kipchorwa district, the sipi falls has a series of water falls; 3 waterfalls series. Sipi Falls is located in sipi sub-county of kapchorwa district. Visiting Sipi falls is comprised of 3 waterfalls each flowing from a different altitude. The highest fall drops from an altitude of 100m referred to as the main fall since it is the last fall in the series. This fall is a little bigger than the other two falls, but all give Uganda a beautiful scenery. As a result, most people say that Sipi falls are the ‘most romantic falls’ in Uganda, which is evidenced by the wonderful falls. At Sipi falls, you can enjoy abseiling along the side of the main sipi falls, of about 100m. You can also enjoy climbing on 14 bolted sports routes back to the top of the falls.
Mount Elgon
While in Kapchorwa, visitors can explore Mount Elgon by trekking to the summit through trails such as Sipi Falls. Many hikers choose to spend a night in Kapchorwa before attempting Wagagai Peak at 4,321 meters for acclimatization. There are several trekking trails around Mount Elgon, all open to everybody since this is not a difficult mountain to climb. These include Sasa trail, Sipi trail and Piswa trial. The full trekking circuit to the peak takes between five to six days to complete. One day hikes are possible from the Forest Exploration Centre at Kapkway, Kapchorwa district.
Kapkway Exploration Center
Kapkway exploration center is one of the attractions in kapchorwa district; this has several trekking trails which go around mountain Elgon. The kapkway exploration center allows everybody to enjoy mountain climbing in Uganda, since it is easy to walk. The trails for hiking include sasa trail, sipi trail and ppiswa trail.
Teryet
Teryet is another interesting place to visit in kapchorwa district. Teryet is a beautiful place raised on a higher altitude, surrounded with beautiful rocks, streams and the vegetation which will blow your mind away. Teryet offer you a chance of a clear view of mountain Elgon forests and the other surrounding of sebei regions of eastern Uganda.

Sports and Athletics
Kapchorwa is also famous for producing world-class athletes such as Stephen Kiprotich, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2012, Joshua Cheptegei, who won gold in the 5000m race in the 2021 Olympics, and Peruth Chemutai, among others. Kapchorwa is known as the Land of Champions for a reason. This town has produced some of the world’s top athletes, including Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, Jacob Kiplimo, Stella Chesang, Victor Kiplangat, Moses Kipsiro, and Stephen Kiprotich. Kapchorwa is a home to some very successful running athletes in the past decade, including gold olympic and world championship medalists, like Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Stephen Kiprotich still living and training there.
Getting to Kapchorwa
From Kampala, Uganda’s capital, Kapchorwa is about a 5 to 6-hour drive via Jinja and Mbale. By road, buses run from Kampala to Mbale, then taxis continue to Kapchorwa. By air, visitors can fly from Entebbe International Airport to Soroti airstrip and then transfer to Kapchorwa. Visitors from Kenya can reach Kapchorwa through the Suam border by road. The Kitale - Suam - Kapchorwa highway has recently been completed, offering a wide, scenic drive through the lush green slopes of Mount Elgon.

Around Kapchorwa town there are luxury, mid-range and budget lodges and hotels for your accommodation. This will depend on where you like to stay. Among other available facilities include; Mbale Resort Hotel, Sipi Valley Resort, Sipi River Lodge, Noah’s Ark hotel, Home of Friends’ hotel, Rafiki lodge and Kingo Cottage.
Local Transportation
The most common way to navigate Kapchorwa is by road, given its mountainous terrain and lack of rail infrastructure. Local buses and minibuses, known as matatus, operate between Kapchorwa town and smaller settlements within the province. These are affordable but can be crowded, with fares typically paid in cash directly to the conductor. For shorter distances or remote areas, boda-bodas are ubiquitous. They are practical for reaching trailheads or villages where larger vehicles cannot go. Self-driving is feasible but requires caution. Roads can be steep and slippery during rains. 4x4 vehicles are recommended, especially for visits to Sipi Falls or Mount Elgon.
Climate and Best Time to Visit
Kapchorwa, nestled in the eastern highlands of Uganda, experiences a tropical highland climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry seasons are marked by clear skies, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall. The best time to visit Kapchorwa is during the dry months from June to September and December to March. During this time, the trails are dry and easier to use. Those who prefer solitude and lush scenery may find the shoulder months of September or May appealing, despite the occasional rain.
Daytime temperatures range from 18°C to 25°C, while nights can drop to 10°C, particularly in higher altitudes. Rainfall is abundant, particularly in April and October, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms.
Tips for Visitors
- Health: Kapchorwa has a hospital, but the quality of care is lower than international standards. For specialised care, the C-Care clinic of IMC Hospital in Mbale (a 1.5-hour drive away) is a reputable option.
- Security: Kapchorwa is considered a safe region for tourists.
