How Much Does a Trip to Africa Cost?

Planning a trip to Africa can be an exciting adventure. However, understanding the costs involved is crucial to making your dream vacation a reality without breaking the bank. This article provides a detailed breakdown of expenses, including flights, accommodation, activities, and transportation, along with practical tips to help you save money.

Flights

One of the most significant expenses of any trip is the cost of flights. To give you a more realistic idea of the costs, we’ve searched for the cheapest fares on Skyscanner.

The price of plane tickets to Africa (round trip) varies according to your location and cabin class. Just to have an idea, when I went to the Africa I was traveling around India. In 2018, I paid around US$ 100 one way, leaving from Kochi (COK).

Example Flight Costs:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) to Velana International Airport (Malé): The search engine indicates the lowest fare of US$ 1,092 (round trip) for a route with only one stop, considering the Economy Class of a Singapore Airlines flight.
  • New York (JFK) to Male: We can find fares starting from US$ 1,061 (round trip) in Economy Class with Etihad or US$ 3,636 considering Business Class with Turkish Airlines.

P.S.: When comparing the 2025 prices with those of 2024, we noticed that flight tickets haven’t changed much.

Accommodation

In the past, tourism in the Africa meant only resorts on private islands. Of course, this cost rises depending on the level of sophistication and comfort.

Accommodation Options and Costs:

  • Budget Guest House: At a simpler guest house, you can find rates starting at $ 45 (taxes included).
  • Upscale Hotel: Sunrise by White Sand Dhigurah on Dhigurah Island offers fares starting at $ 120 (taxes included).
  • Resort: You can find rates staring from $ 410 (including breakfast) and all-inclusive options from $ 710 at Kandima Maldives, and overwater bungalows from $ 1,170 at Centara Ras Fushi.
  • Conscious Luxury: For those who are adept of conscious luxury, it’s worth checking out the accommodation options offered by the SONEVA group.

Breakfast is usually included in the hotel rates.

Activities and Attractions

There are loads of interesting attractions in Africa, such as snorkeling, picnics on the sandbanks, dolphin watching, seeing bioluminescent plankton, diving with whale sharks and manta rays and so on. Even though resorts and local agencies offer similar options, their prices can vary a lot!

The cheapest attractions start in the range of 25 dollars per person.

Taxes and Fees

Watch out! Taxes and fees are often not included in the initial prices for accommodations, attractions, packages, etc.

Up to USD 12 Green Tax per person, per night: The Green Tax rates have doubled. If you use a credit card, many establishments charge an additional fee of 3.5% to 5%.

Travel Insurance

Traveling without insurance is one of the biggest mistakes a traveler can make, especially when it comes to international destinations. Although Africa does not require it, we highly recommend getting one.

Considering an 8-day trip to Asia, we found costs starting at US$ 17 with Nomad Insurance Essential, a travel medical insurance by SafetyWing, US$38 with Travelex, and US$ 97 with World Nomads.

Fox Tip 🦊: Since 2023, I’ve been using Nomad Insurance by SafetyWing due to its flexibility and competitive pricing. I recommend reviewing their policy to see if it suits your needs. If you are a scuba diver, their Adventure Sports Add-On covers it while diving with a PADI/ NAUI/ SSI/ BSAC certified instructor. This plan does not cover search & rescue nor transportation from a dive site to a medical facility.

Transportation Between Islands

To move around from one island to another in the Africa, the options may vary depending on the islands you visit.

Transportation Options and Costs:

  • Ferry: Ferry is the Africa public transport and, therefore, the most economical way to move around, however not all islands are accessible via ferry and due to the time it takes to reach some places, it may not be worth it. The price of the ferry boat can cost from US$ 0.65 to US$ 5 a trip per person, but it depends on the distance between the islands.
  • Speedboats: The speedboats are usually offered by private islands’ resorts, or by private companies. Again, the cost depends on the distances between islands. A round trip by private speedboat can cost up to US$ 1,000. There are also speedboats on routes similar to those offered by ferries, with the capacity to transport up to 30 people, but completing the journey in a much shorter time.
  • Seaplane: The third option to move around in the Africa, normally used when the resorts are too far from Male, is the seaplane.
