A valid passport and visa are required for U.S. citizens to visit Ghana. This article outlines the visa requirements for the Ghana Embassy in Washington D.C.
General Requirements
To apply for a Ghana visa, you will generally need the following:
- Passport: A signed U.S. passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of entry into Ghana, with at least one blank visa page. Photocopies are not acceptable.
- Application Form: One completed and signed Visa Application Form.
- Photographs: Two passport-type photographs.
- Vaccination Certificate: An International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever.
- Flight Itinerary: A computer-generated flight itinerary from a travel agent or a copy of your round-trip airline ticket.
- Order Form: An AA Passport Service order form.
Types of Ghana Visas and Specific Requirements
The requirements may vary based on the type of visa you are applying for:
1. Ghana Tourist Visa
In addition to the general requirements, if you are visiting a religious organization, you must submit a Letter of Invitation from the inviting party in Ghana.

- A copy of the applicant’s Birth Certificate with the names of both parents is required.
- A NOTARIZED “parental consent” signed by both parents/legal guardians (this applies regardless of whether parents/legal guardians are traveling with applicant).
- A copy of the parents' identification (like passport data page or driver’s license).
2. Ghana Business Visa
In addition to the general requirements, you will need a letter from your U.S. company.
For Minor Applicants (age 21 or younger):
- A copy of the applicant’s Birth Certificate with the names of both parents is required.
- A “parental consent” signed by both parents/legal guardians (this applies regardless of whether parents/legal guardians are travelling with applicant).
3. Official or Diplomat Visa
In addition to the general requirements:
- A valid and signed U.S. Official or Diplomatic Passport (valid at least 6 months beyond the date of entry; with at least one blank visa page) - photocopy is not acceptable.
- A letter from the sending department or agency, addressed to: Embassy of Ghana, Visa Section, Washington D.C. The letter must explain all of the following:
- Applicant’s position and title
- Purpose of the trip
- Dates of the intended travel
- Contact person in Ghana

Additional Information
- The application form must be filled out completely with answers for all fields.
- Non-US Passport holders must provide proof of US residency permits to qualify for a Ghana visa in the US (photocopies).
- Please provide a color, passport size photo. The photograph must be printed on photo paper, must be 2″ by 2″ and have a white background, and must have been taken not more than three (3) months from the date of submitting the application.
- Evidence of financial support (bank statement) or a letter of invitation from your host in Ghana.
- Copy of Covid-19 Vaccine Certificate.
- Copy of your airline ticket or travel agent itinerary.
- Applications for persons under eighteen (18) years must be submitted with a copy of the birth certificate, a Ghana Consent form signed by both parents, and a copy of the parent’s photo ID.

Place all required documents, application forms, the application fee, and a prepaid return envelope together in a trackable envelope (e.g. FedEx) so that your passport may be returned.
Make sure to indicate the type of processing being requested (e.g. regular or rush) and include payment for the visa.
Send the application packet to the Ghana Consulate via a trackable envelope.
Payments should be made by bank draft or postal money order to the Ghana High Commission, Ottawa.
If applying in person, bring all documents, application form, and payment to the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa.

Health Requirements and Recommendations
- Vaccination against Yellow Fever is required.
- Exempt from Yellow Fever vaccination: Children under 9 months of age.
- Warning: Passengers leaving Ghana are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate upon departure.
- Malaria prophylaxis is recommended. Malaria risk exists throughout the year in the whole country.
Certain countries may require vaccinations if your prior point of departure is from a country that is deemed a health risk.
