The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) consists of the army, air force, and navy, each with its own distinctive uniforms and insignia. This article delves into the rank structure and insignia of the Ghana Armed Forces, exploring its historical roots and contemporary adaptations.
Historical Context
In 1959, two years after Ghana's independence from the British Empire, the Gold Coast Regiment was withdrawn from the Royal West African Frontier Force. This regiment formed the basis for the new Ghanaian army. At independence, Ghana opted to retain the British order of military ranks and corresponding insignia.
The command structure for the army forces in Ghana originally stemmed from the British Army's West Africa Command. Lieutenant General Lashmer Whistler was the penultimate commander holding the command from 1951 to 1953.
The Ghanaian Prime Minister, Kwame Nkrumah, wished to rapidly expand and Africanise the army to support his Pan-African and anti-colonial ambitions. In 1961, the 4th and 5th Battalions were established and the 6th Battalion in 1964, from a parachute unit originally raised in 1963. The Second Infantry Brigade Group was established in 1961 to command the two battalions raised that year.
Initial British planning before 1959 had provided for all British officers to be withdrawn by 1970. Under pressure from Nkrumah, plans were revised for all British personnel to depart by 1962. Matters deteriorated further after the coup that deposed Nkrumah.

Uniforms and Insignia

Rank Structure
The focus of this article is on the rank structure in the Ghana Armed Forces.
- Commissioned Officers: The officer ranks go from Second Lieutenant - Lieutenant - Captain as Junior Officers. From Captain, the officer moves into the Senior officer zone from Major- Lieutenant Colonel - Colonel. From Colonel, an officer advances to the zone of Generals. The General rank from Colonel is Brigadier-General (One Star) - Major-General (Two-Star) - Lieutenant-General (Three-Star) and General-of-the-Army (Four-Star).
- Non-Commissioned Officers: With the Other Ranks, on passing out from the Training Centre the recruit starts as a Private. Progression from Private is to Lance-Corporal - Corporal - Sergeant - Staff Sergeant - Warrant Officer Class 2 - Warrant Officer Class One.
There are two kinds of courses/commission for officers. There is a second category of Short Service Commissioned (SSC) officers. These are professionals like doctors, lawyers, teachers, architects, engineers etc. They train to become officers to pursue their original course of study as military doctors, educationists, lawyers etc. There is also a Special Duties (SD) Course which is run together with the Short Service Commission, hence SSC/SD Course. The SD Course is for Non-commissioned officers who are commissioned into specific areas of specialisation, e.g. Weapons, Quartermaster (Logistics) and Drill and Duties.

Promotion examinations are taken along the line for advancement or otherwise. Each of them is headed by a Service Chief. They are all two-star Generals and equivalent.
As for the Officers, the Air Force ranks are less commonly known to the ordinary man and apparently don’t carry the same level of gravitas as their army equivalent. On commission, after meeting all the requirements over a period of study, the trainee (Officer Cadet) becomes a Second-Lieutenant in the Army, or the equivalent of Pilot Officer in the Air Force or Acting Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy.
