Frontier Safaris: An Unforgettable South African and Namibian Hunting Experience

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure through the heart of Africa with an exhilarating Frontier Safari. Frontier Safaris specializes in the plains game species of South Africa and Namibia.

A Legacy of Safari Excellence

Frontier Safaris was established over 31 years ago. In 1989, Barry Burchell had a very clear goal of establishing Africa's greatest safari outfitting. The Burchell family has a long African history.

Dr. William John Burchell traveled by ship to South Africa in 1810 as a botanist where he collected a fair amount of plant species to be taken back to England to be studied. While he was in Africa, he named and described many animals. Some of the most common are; Burchell Zebra, Burchells Coucal, Burchells Sandgrouse, Black Footed Cat, White Rhino, and the African Wild Dog.

William returned to England, presented his work, and moved back to Africa with his family in 1819 just before the British settlers came in 1820. Although he himself did not have any children, Barry’s descendent is William’s brother. Barry is the 7th generation Burchell to be born in South Africa and his sons are the 8th generation African Burchells.

The Ranches

With three pristine ranches stretching across South Africa and Namibia, Frontier Safaris totals to 240,000 acres. Frontier Safaris owns 3 private hunting ranches covering over 200,000 acres and home to 50,000 animals.

Burchell Game Reserve - Eastern Cape, South Africa

Burchell Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa is made up of over 75, 000 acres of unmatched rolling hills, the best Cape Kudu habitat. “Hebron”, is the first farm that makes up Burchell Game Reserve South Africa. It was bought by the Burchell family in 1987. Today, this area is the premier game area of Southern Africa.

Barry took over the control of Hebron Farm from his family in 1989 and launched Frontier Safaris. Only recently, during the quiet 2020 season, a wheel chair friendly room was added to Masada Lodge. In total, we have about 30 different species on Burchell Game Reserve. There are no internal fences on either of Burchell Game Reserves ranches allowing animals to roam freely. We take pride in our fair chase safaris and love the challenge big open ranches bring to the hunt.

Daweb-Suid - South Namibia

Daweb-Suid, in South Namibia, stretches over 120, 000 acres of sub Kalahari desert home to unmatched herds of springbuck and oryx. The South Namibian Ranch, Dawe-Suid, is the biggest of the three ranches owned by the Burchell family. It has been in the family the longest, since 1984. The Burchells are very proud to be the owners of this 120, 000 acre ranch.

As they have in the north, Frontier Safaris has set up a traditional African safari style tented camp on the south ranch with 6 wall tents and a boma for dining and siting around a bonfire under the stars. This ranch is the home of the Burchell Oryx or better known as the Golden Oryx. The south camp is also in a malaria free zone. Clients will fly into Windhoek and have a five hour scenic drive down to the South Namibian Ranch. The closest town to the ranch is Keetmanshoop.

Trudia - North Namibia

Trudia in North Namibia, is only 15 miles South of the well known Etosha national park and its 45, 000 acres of jagged rocky hills and thick Mopani forest is home to Africas best kudu. The northern Namibian ranch was purchased back in 1995, the most recent addition to the three ranches owned by the Burchell family. It is situated just South of Etosha National Park, approximately a five hour scenic drive from Windhoek Airport.

The ranch covers 45,000 acres and the nearest town to this ranch is Outjo. Frontier Safaris Namibia operates out of a beautiful traditional African style tented camp built by Barry and his team back in 2004. The ranch’s topography is rolling hills covered in thick Mopani trees with a few open areas in the lower laying regions and is situated in a malaria free zone.

Lodging and Accommodations

Our South African lodge has 17 individual chalets each with their own bathroom. Eight chalets are couples suites with a king size bed, bath, and shower. Eight are bachelor rooms with two double beds and a shower. One chalet is wheelchair friendly with a roll-in shower and bath. We have Wi-Fi in the boma and very good cell phone reception.

Clients enjoy breakfast and lunch in our dining room. Dinner is served in the boma where a fire is burning each night and drinks are served at the bar. Our Namibian lodge has newly renovated rooms. There are six individual chalets with two double beds and a shower. This lodge off the grid and only uses solar power. There is limited cell phone signal available.

The Hunting Experience

My favorites are the spiral horned kudu, bushbuck, nyala and eland. They invoke a challenge few other plains game species do. Whether it is because of the terrain in which they live, their generally shy persona, or perhaps their sheer beauty, there is something unique about them. My favorite species to hunt is the Cape buffalo.

On plains game hunts, I rarely carry a firearm, besides my side arm, but I always have a spare rifle just in case my client falls and damages his or her rifle. My all-around plains game rifle is my Blaser R93 in .300 Win. Mag.

Sustainable Hunting

I believe sustainable hunting is the greatest conservation method practiced today. We practice extensive genetic diversification by taking only animals that have reached or surpassed breeding maturity.
