The Historical Tapestry of Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa

Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa stands as a beacon of luxury and tranquility in the Helderberg region of South Africa. Its history is a captivating journey through time, reflecting the rich heritage of the Cape Winelands. We call ourselves ERINVALERS … and we call Erinvale our home, our club and sometimes our little paradise…

Let's delve into the story of Erinvale, from its origins to its present-day prominence.

Before Erinvale: 1655 - 1989

The story begins long before the establishment of Erinvale Estate as we know it today. In the early 18th century, the land was part of a much larger estate known as Vergelegen.

The transformation of the region started with key events:

  • 1700 - 1706: Vergelegen farm, encompassing approximately 30,000 hectares, was acquired by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, the Governor of the Cape.
  • 1709: Vergelegen farm was divided into 4 separate farms, including Vergelegen, Lourensford (originally Vellerbereiders’ Molen), Morgenster (including Land-en-Zeezicht).

These divisions set the stage for the development of distinct estates, each with its unique identity and contribution to the region's agricultural and cultural landscape.

The Vision of Erinvale: 1989 - 1995

The modern history of Erinvale Estate began with a visionary named David Gant.

  • 1989: David Gant, the owner of the adjacent Lourensford Estate (approximately 4,000 hectares), purchased Erinvale Farm from Bester Broers through an auction. This acquisition completed a full circle, as Erinvale was originally part of the Lourensford farm. The purchase included the farmhouse, which now serves as the Erinvale Hotel.

Gant's vision extended beyond simply owning the land. He envisioned a world-class estate that would offer a unique blend of residential living, recreation, and hospitality.

Planning and Development

The transformation of Erinvale Farm into a prestigious estate required careful planning and execution.

  • 1990: Gant appointed the Gary Player Design Company (GPDC) to design a championship standard golf course. Phil Jacobs of GPDC oversaw the design work, visiting the golf course every two weeks during the construction phase.
  • 1991: The Planning Partnership submitted a Project Proposal (”Aansoekverslag”) to the Town Council of Somerset West, receiving their approval.

The opening of Erinvale marked the beginning of a new era for the region, attracting residents, golfers, and visitors from around the world.

Hosting the World Cup of Golf: 1996

Erinvale quickly gained international recognition when it was selected to host a prestigious sporting event.

  • 1996: Erinvale Golf Club hosted the 42nd World Cup of Golf, featuring 32 nations, each fielding a two-ball team. Ernie Els and Wayne Westner represented South Africa and emerged victorious.

Hosting the World Cup elevated Erinvale's status as a world-class golfing destination and showcased its beauty and hospitality to a global audience.
