Cape Town, also known as the ‘Mother City’ of South Africa, is a city that never sleeps! When the sun sets, the city transforms into a hub of energy and excitement. Cape Town’s nightlife scene offers a plethora of options for music lovers and party enthusiasts alike, from trendy bars to pulsating clubs.
Why Party in Cape Town?
After living in Cape Town for 6 months, I can confidently say it’s one of the best places to go out and party. If you’re looking for it, there’s something going on every single night. I loved experiencing all that Cape Town nightlife had to offer, my favourite being some casual drinks on the bunkers by Signal Hill with a group of friends that DJ.

First Thursdays
Anyone who’s been to Cape Town will have heard about First Thursdays! It takes place on the first Thursday of every month (as you probably guessed) and art galleries, restaurants and bars stay open late. The point is to experience Cape Town’s art scene as most of the galleries are free to enter and some will even hand out free drinks.
Street Parties
The street parties in Cape Town are unlike anything I’ve experienced before! They happen throughout the year but mostly during the summer when the weather is best. You’ll hear about them popping up here and there around different neighbourhoods in the city but I’ve been to a few on Bree Street. The Street parts in Cape Town are usually completely free to enter (or sometimes a small fee) and are a lot of fun so if you get a chance to go to one, you definitely should!

Cape Town Clubs
If you’re looking for the best clubs in Cape Town, there are a few places you should start looking! You’re pretty much guaranteed to find a good one anywhere around Kloof Street, Long Street or Bree Street, however, there are a few others in different spots worth checking out.
With this list of the best clubs in Cape Town, you should be set to have an incredible night out, no matter the occasion!
- The Waiting Room: For lovers of hip hop and alternative music, The Waiting Room, where Kloof and Long Street meet, is a must-visit. The intimate venue, stylish decor and electronic atmosphere create the perfect ambience for a great night out. It’s relaxed dress code and regular live bands promise an unforgettable experience! This club is definitely a local hot spot and I had the best time dancing there during the Christmas holidays. It’s probably one of, if not the best of the Long Street clubs in my humble opinion.
- The Athletic Club & Social: If you’re after a more mature vibe on a night out, The Athletic Club & Social is your best bet! One of the city’s best spots for live music, The Athletic is also much more than that. Entering this grand old building on Buitengracht Street, your curiosity leads you upstairs and downstairs, through a moody labyrinth of spaces each more sumptuous and “extra” than the last - a whimsical design fantasy of colonial-meets-modern and plush gentleman’s club. It has a 25+ vibe with a luxurious interior and an older crowd. It’s a great place to go for a few drinks or a nightcap. There’s the Trapezaria (a dining room serving fantastic Greek and fire-roasted fare), three glorious bars (with a separate canapé menu), a balcony with views of Signal Hill, and a speakeasy-like basement, The Trophy Room, where live jazz creates sexy magic.
- Arcade: Cape Town’s ultimate destination for nostalgic fun and pulsating beats. I have personally never been to Arcade, but it’s super popular and always pumping on a First Thursday, when it stays open extra late. Situated in the heart of the city, this nightclub seamlessly blends the excitement of classic arcade games with an electrifying club atmosphere. It’s all blaring music and neon lights, so if you’re looking for a rager then this is a good place to go.
- The Village Idiot: Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, The Village Idiot is a lively gastropub that’s a chill spot during the day but really lights up at night. They play a lot of pop music and throwbacks that attract a younger crowd.
- Grand Africa: Grand Africa is definitely one of the best clubs in Cape Town that promises an unforgettable night. It’s right on the pristine shores of Cape Town’s coastline, this opulent nightclub offers breathtaking ocean views, world-class DJs and a glamorous ambience. Immerse yourself in the chic and stylish atmosphere as you dance the night away on the expansive dance floor. There are sea views, yes, but it’s the private beach that sets it apart, where you can eat, drink and play - Ibiza-style - with your toes in the sand. Housed in a restored boathouse, the interiors are old-world romantic and casually glam. The menu offers all the popular classics (pizza, steak, pasta, sushi), while five bars ensure patrons have their choice of cocktails, bubbly, craft beer and excellent Cape wines.
- Cabo Beach Club: This beachside paradise is a hidden gem along Cape Town’s shores. Cabo is an unexpectedly glam set-up in the midst of Cape Town’s docklands. Inspired by beach clubs around the world (think Ibiza, Mykonos, Tulum, Bali), the Mother City’s hottest waterside haven combines stylish decor, culinary delights and scintillating cocktails with the soul and vibrancy of Africa. Cabo Beach Club offers a luxurious escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with crystal clear beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. Lounge on the plush sunbeds, sip on refreshing cocktails and soak up the glorious Cape Town sun! Its chic decor and panoramic ocean views make it the perfect setting for relaxation and enjoyment. With swaying palm trees, a walk-in pool, cool beats, powdery sand underfoot, sea views and the whiff of piña coladas in the air, and top local and international DJs on the decks (or live acts), there’s always a vibe - from salsa sessions and jazzy house to amapiano beats.
- Modular: This is the place to go if you’re after a late night of drinking in Cape Town! Ugh. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been to Modular once and I thought it was hell on Earth. Modular is known to be a little grungy, dark and place hardcore electronic music.
- Pink Candy (formerly known as Pink Panther) is an LGBTQ+ nightclub and it’s probably the only club I actually enjoy going to.
- Club Paradise is very much a young person’s club - as in, if you’re 25, you’ll probably feel ancient. It’s known for attracting up-and-coming DJ talent and having huge neon light displays, which admittedly look pretty cool.
- The Bank is a premier nightclub located in the vibrant city of Cape Town, known for its electrifying atmosphere and state-of-the-art facilities. It stands out as a top destination for nightlife enthusiasts, offering an exceptional blend of music, dance, and entertainment. With a meticulously designed interior that combines luxury with contemporary style, “The Bank” provides an unforgettable experience for its patrons. The club features an array of world-class DJs and artists, ensuring a diverse and high-energy music lineup that caters to various tastes. Its strategic location in Cape Town enhances its appeal, making it accessible and a must-visit spot for locals and tourists alike.
- District is the main clubbing venue, with a set-up for live gigs, where leather booths surround the gleaming, polished-wood dance floor equipped with a state-of-the-art sound system.
Cape Town Bars
Want a more chill night out? These bars might be a better option for you!
- The House of Machines: The House of Machines is an iconic establishment in Cape Town’s city center. It was the first bar I went to when I stepped foot in the city and it still remains one of my favourites! The vibe is laidback and cool, especially inside where they often have live music. The House of Machines is the heart of Cape Town’s cool, a blend of cafes, live music venues, and motorcycle workshops. It embodies a raw, industrial aesthetic where the love for craftsmanship shines through its carefully curated drinks menu. Here, artisanal coffee, craft beer, and bespoke cocktails are served with passion.
- Bob’s Bar: This bar has an impressive selection of craft beers from local breweries, providing a haven for any beer connoisseur. - Cafe Caprice: Situated right along the beach, Cafe Caprice combines stunning ocean views with a lively atmosphere. This popular venue offers a vibrant mix of music genres, live entertainment and a delicious cocktail menu. Caprice is where you’ll find the glam squad, who flock to this vibey hotspot on the strip for café-chic meals (the burgers are superb), expert cocktails at the Veuve Clicquot bar and an uninterrupted view of the ocean. Café Caprice is known as “the place to be” on Sunday nights during the summer.
- Selective Live: Located in the heart of the city, this venue showcases a curated lineup of talented local and international artists across various genres. - The Power & The Glory: The Power & The Glory is a popular spot with friendly staff and an impressive selection of craft beers, wines and cocktails. P&G is a cute, old-timey bar and is actually off of Kloof Street at the Kloof Nek Road intersection. It’s the perfect spot for a first date or a few drinks with friends with retro decor, a cozy setting and an electric ambience.
- The Moveable Feast: The Moveable Feast sits right atop The Power and The Glory and is a great spot to check out if you want a little more action. With loud music bumping inside but a small outdoor seating area to hang out and share a few drinks, you get the best of both worlds with The Moveable Feast.
- BLONDIE: BLONDIE is a new bar that opened on Kloof Street in 2022. Blondie currently reigns supreme as the coolest bar in the Mother City. It’s like the jewel in the crown of Cape Town nightlife, for the cool kids, anyway. It’s in a busy area among other bars and hostels which attracts a young crowd and plenty of tourists. It’s definitely one of the best bars in the city with colourful decor and it’s set up with a number of picnic tables inside and outdoors so you can enjoy the fresh air on a summer evening! There’s actually a pretty good food menu here, too. The watermelon salad is the perfect light meal on a hot day, but they also have heartier options like pitas and wood fired potatoes.
- Yours Truly Rooftop Bar: There is a downstairs area that’s very laidback and relaxed and a rooftop that’s gorgeous with many hanging plants trickling down the ceiling. The rooftop is a chill area until the sun goes down and that’s when the music gets turned up! Yours Truly is a fun Kloof Street bar with lots of leafy decorations. It’s nice and airy with a fun vibe, and they often have DJs playing here on weekends.
- Clarke’s Bar: Clarke’s is a SUPER relaxed bar if you’re looking for something chill. Clarke’s is home to one of the best burgers in Cape Town, but they also offer great cocktails here. I’ve been a handful of times with friends and it’s definitely the type of place to grab a bite to eat, alongside a few drinks.
- Surfa Rosa: Embrace the surf culture in Cape Town at this coastal-inspired bar. It’s a slice of paradise for locals and tourists alike who are looking for a different type of vibe in town.
- Van Hunks: Embark on a legendary drinking experience at Vn Hunks Bar, a renowned establishment in Cape Town steeped in folklore. Named after the mythical character who challenged the devil to a smoking contest, this bar boasts a lively atmosphere and a rich history. Van Hunks is an old school bar with cheap drinks, cheesy tunes, and friendly staff.
- The Dark Horse Bar: Uncover the allure of The Dark Horse Bar, a hidden gem tucked away in Cape Town’s nightlife scene on Kloof St. This intimate and stylish bar exudes a mysterious and enchanting ambiance that captivates its patrons. Step into a world of dimly lit elegance, with its plush seating, flickering candles and electric decor.
- The Shack: I don’t think there’s a more casual bar than The Shack in Cape Town. It’s filled with locals and tourists who want a pint and a game or two of pool. They have many pool tables on different floors, making it one of the best places to visit if you want an activity to go alongside your drink.
- Kloof Street House oozes old world opulence. Having a drink here feels a bit like going back to the 1920s to engage in some debauchery, and I love it.
- Asoka is a glamorous, low-lit cocktail lounge that often has DJs playing dance beats. The cocktails here are really good, especially the pornstar martinis!
- Tiger’s Milk is a local chain of bars with reasonably priced drinks and a fun atmosphere. The food can be a bit hit-and-miss but the pizzas, burgers, and flatbreads are usually a safe bet.
- The Station on Bree is a London underground themed pub.
- Gin Bar is a speakeasy hidden behind Honest Chocolate Cafe on Wale Street, which is just off of Bree Street. This is a great place to be on a Friday night and there’s always a buzz here later in the evening.
- Chinchilla is a bougie rooftop bar that wouldn’t be amiss in Mykonos. It’s super stylish and offers gorgeous views of Camps Bay Beach. It’s probably the most desirable place to have drinks on the Camps Bay Strip, and the prices definitely reflect that, but their Tropical Waves cocktail really is something special. I also loved the grilled fish!
- Sweetie’s Beer Hall is an African beer hall with a fun atmosphere and a nice outdoor terrace. It’s a small spot that lots of people miss, but it’s definitely worth a visit. I had so much fun playing ping pong here, even though I’m terrible at it.

The bar’s inventive drinks menu is a tribute to local flavors, utilizing unique ingredients sourced from the Cape’s mountains, gardens, and oceans. - The Blue Room cocktail lounge and jazz club (at 103 Bree) is a magnet for a “grown-up” night out that ticks all the boxes: top-notch drinks, fantastic food and great music. Expect sets by some of the country’s best musicians in an atmospheric speakeasy space. Patrons can settle in early with exquisite cocktails and small sharing plates, or enjoy a proper dinner (here or upstairs at chef Matt Manning’s Grub & Vine bistro), then disappear behind the blue curtains to enjoy the show.
- Hacienda (at 92 Bree) has turned up the heat with its gaucho-chic interiors (leather booths, mosaic floors, ceramic drinkware) and spice-flecked food inspired by the “coastal cuisine” of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.
- One Park, a hidden gem in Park Road just off Kloof, combines music, food, drink and art in one enticing package. A heritage building transformed into a cool hub custom-made for music lovers, the upstairs listening room hosts a roster of DJs (and is kitted out in moody lighting and comfy couches).
- Rita’s, perched above Hudson’s, is a gorgeous tequila den (half-price margaritas from 5pm - 7pm). A curvy bar counter takes centre stage, where the sound of cocktails being shaken is all part of the rhythm of the night. There are two rooftop terraces with a wonderful view of the mountain, and a DJ spinning tunes for a dancefloor takeover later.
- Saint Champagne Bar & Lounge is nestled in a prestigious location and exudes elegance and exclusivity. This opulent venue is renowned for its extensive selection of fine champagnes, sophisticated decor, and an intimate ambiance. As night falls, it transforms into a vibrant nightclub where Cape Town’s fashionable crowd gathers to enjoy expertly crafted cocktails, premium service, and a curated soundtrack provided by renowned DJs.
- Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge is known for its vibrant Afro-chic vibe, offering a rich blend of African luxury and contemporary nightlife. This stylish spot attracts a trendy, upmarket crowd with its live music performances, DJ sets featuring Afro-beats, and a mouth-watering menu of gourmet African cuisine.
- Club 169 holds a special place in Cape Town’s nightlife, known for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse music selection that caters to all tastes.
- She had disco in her eyes and they called her… This pretty much sums up the vibe at this brand-new Sea Point nightspot, with its mirror ball and hot disco-fever beats.
Nightlife Hotspots
Cape Town is not only famous for its stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures, but it also boasts a vibrant and diverse nightlife scene that caters to every taste.
- Long Street: Located in the heart of Cape Town’s city centre, Long Street is a bustling hub of bars, clubs, and restaurants. This lively street is the perfect place to begin your night, with a vast selection of venues catering to different tastes and vibes. Long Street is home to lively and unpretentious nightlife. It’s also really not the safest place to go out. I feel pretty safe going out in all the other parts of Cape Town that I just mentioned, but I hardly ever head to Long Street after dark.
- Bree Street: For a more sophisticated night out, head to Bree Street, known for its stylish bars and innovative cocktail offerings. Bree Street runs through Cape Town city centre and you can find many of the city’s best bars along - or just off of - here. It’s a lively street with plenty of bars, great places to eat, tons of culture, and a great energy overall. It’s definitely the best place to go on Cape Town’s infamous First Thursdays. Start your evening at fable, a stylish bar that serves up expertly crafted cocktails.
- Kloof Street: Just a short walk from Long Street, Kloof Street is renowned for its eclectic mix of restaurants and bars. Kloof Street is one of the most popular places to go out in Cape Town. I would also add that Kloof Street is one of the only places in Cape Town where I’d say it’s okay to walk at night. It’s well lit and there are always lots of people around. One of the city’s buzziest hubs, a stroll along this street in Gardens will have you hopping from sundowners and tapas to supper, drinks and beyond. You’ll find plenty of bars with banging soundtracks and dancefloors aplenty.
- Victoria & Alfred Waterfront: The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is home to some of Cape Town’s most luxurious and exclusive nightlife venues.
- Observatory: For a more alternative and bohemian night out, head to the suburb of Observatory, a haven for live music and creative souls.
- Camps Bay: For a glamorous night out with picturesque beach views, Camps Bay is the place to be. The Camps Bay Strip runs parallel to the beach and it’s a gorgeous place to spend a summer evening out on the town. With a palm-fringed beach and a buzzing promenade lined with alfresco café-bars, Camps Bay has the sparkle of St Tropez and the sex appeal of Miami South Beach. It’s hot, sexy, but oh-so chilled. This cool and contemporary rooftop bar on the Camps Bay strip, with its killer views of the beach and ocean a stone’s throw away, is the ideal place to while away the hours sipping on cocktails and listening to cool tunes. With its greenery, natural materials and pops of colour, it feels like a well-heeled bohemian tropical-beach shack. A menu of sushi, “bar bites”, platters and café classics (seafood, steaks, burgers) means that you can stay fuelled up. It’s the location that lures people here - to discover a beachside idyll unlike any other in Cape Town.
- Harrington Street: Pick your flavour: this nightlife enclave covers all the bases, incorporating the atmospheric, Havana-ish Rum Runner Bar; edgy-punky dive bar SurfaRosa; and Harrington’s, an elegant cocktail lounge serving global tapas, with retro velvet seating, glam chandeliers and panoramic views of the East City.
