This year is definitely all about Zimbabwe, and I was lucky enough to spend some time exploring this beautiful country. Set within the secluded hills of northern Zimbabwe, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge offers breathtaking views of the vast and shimmering Lake Kariba - one of the largest reservoirs in the world.
Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is rooted in the traditions of the Tonga people and the legend of Nyami Nyami, the river god said to protect Lake Kariba and the Zambezi.

Location and Setting
Perched on a hill, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge offers breathtaking views and warm hospitality. With its elevated position above Lake Kariba and a rim flow swimming pool that looks to be flowing into the eternal blue waters, guests would be forgiven for mistaking Bumi Hills Safari Lodge for a beach resort. The photos of Bumi Hills Lodge do not do it justice. The décor of the lodge and views of Lake Kariba are exceptional.
Accommodation
The Lodge houses 10 spacious suites, each complete with air-conditioning, a freestanding bath, an indoor and outdoor shower, a mini bar, and a private viewing deck extending out towards Lake Kariba. Each room at Bumi Hills is designed for comfort and luxury.

For families or groups of friends seeking a more exclusive experience, the Baobab Villa provides the ideal retreat. This private villa includes two large suites, a living room, and dining areas both inside and out. Activities and Experiences
On its own private safari concession, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is surrounded by rich wildlife thanks to its proximity to Matusadona National Park. Thanks to its location above Lake Kariba, touching the northeastern border of Matusadona National Park, you can look forward to an exceptional safari adventure.
At the Lodge, enjoy a variety of activities including boating, game drives, fishing, sunset cruises, walking safaris, star gazing, night drives, and birdwatching. While there is game on this concession-you can go on bush walks and game drives-the focus is really on lake activities. Fishing and cruises are quite popular.
Having Kariba right on your doorstep means spending days exploring the lake on private boat cruises and trying your hand at tiger fishing. There’s also the option of going on scenic walking safaris around the lake, or venturing further into the surrounding forests to discover fossilised dinosaur footprints. Alternatively, interact with the local community and learn about their history and traditions.
Choose from two unique experiences: a half-day cruise with a delightful lunch or extend your adventure with an overnight retreat. Lady Jacqueline can comfortably host up to eight guests. On the lower level, you’ll find two spacious queen-size bedrooms, each boasting their own ensuite bathroom. Make the most of Lady Jacqueline’s on-board amenities such as a refreshing plunge pool and a comfortable air-conditioned main lounge cabin.

Together with a local guide, you explore the area on both land and water. Go on game drives, take a boat cruise at sunset, try catch-and-release fishing or join a guided walk through the bush. Lake Kariba is alive with hippos, buffalo, crocodiles and birds, while the surrounding bushveld is home to elephants, lions and leopards.
Although we had great game drives & game viewing, I think this is a perfect addition to any Zimbabwe safari itinerary to include some more diverse experiences such as boat cruises, fishing, walking & authentic Tonga village visits.
One of my favorite days out was just sitting out on the lake near one of the islands and listening to the birds, while 5 crocodiles hunted the waterbuck on shore. The experience was truly magical (though maybe not so much for the antelope).

The luxurious Lady Jacqueline boat offers both day and overnight lake adventures with ensuite cabins, a plunge pool as well as a top-deck viewing area. The lodge itself is designed to feel open and welcoming, with wooden finishes, natural textures and spaces that invite you to look out over the lake. There's an infinity pool, a spa and a gym, plus an outdoor dining area under canvas. Each suite has air conditioning, a private deck as well as both indoor and outdoor showers.
Your children will be well taken care of at the Ngwana Club, where trained supervisors will help them pass their days with fun craft and cooking activities, as well as excursions to local schools and villages. Yes, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is ideal for families with children of all ages.

Conservation Efforts
Mola rural district (village) is located parallel to the Bumi wildlife area and is roughly a 1.5-hour drive from our Bumi Hills Safari lodge in Kariba Zimbabwe. Human-wildlife conflict and co-existence remain a critical part of our conservation efforts.
Our Build a Lion Boma Initiative aims to support the ABCF Human-Wildlife conflict efforts in the Mola community in Zimbabwe. The Lion bomas are used to protect the community’s livestock from predators and lions. A boma is a cloth material that is used to cover kraal’s so lions are unable to see the animals in the kraal, thus protecting the livestock inside from lions. Should you wish to build a boma, a donation of $2,000 towards the foundation will apply which goes towards the cost of the lion boma.
Personal Touch and Service
We spend three days at Bumi and loved every minute. From the greeting when we arrived, to the similarly wonderful farewell song when we left, it was an amazing experience. What Bumi has is fantastic scenery and the ability to see animals a little differently.
Also, Bumi has a very personal touch. We were given a surprise every day. The staff were all amazing too. Beautiful grounds, top Service, activities varied - first class pampering program! We would definitely come back! 2-3 days or longer ideal! The design, decor is very appealing and well maintained.
Bumi was even better. The lodge is in a wonderful position and every single one of the staff members we encountered were extremely friendly, skilled, enthusiastic, obliging and professional. Madison, the game ranger who took us fishing and on game drives and boat cruises was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and accommodating and warm. He is an absolute Gem who played an important role in making our visit to Bumi so enjoyable. The pilot, Ronald, who flew us to and from Vic Falls and Bumi was also extremely friendly as well as skilled and professional.
