Chad Hansen: Biography of an American Football Wide Receiver

Timothy Chad Hansen (born January 18, 1995) is an American former professional football wide receiver. Throughout his career, Hansen demonstrated his athletic abilities and passion for the sport, leaving his mark on various teams.

Early Life and High School Career

Hansen grew up in Fillmore, California, and attended Moorpark High School in Moorpark, California. At Moorpark High School, Hansen was a team captain and MVP of both the varsity football and track and field teams. He earned first-team all-Marmonte League and Ventura County honors. During his senior season, he recorded 49 catches for 882 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging nearly 20 yards per catch. In addition to his football achievements, Hansen won the Marmonte League Championship as an individual in the 100 meter and two team championships. He maintained over a 3.5 GPA through high school.

College Career

Hansen's lone scholarship offer to play college football was from Idaho State University. After the season, he transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, to join their team as a walk-on.

Idaho State (2013)

As a true freshman at Idaho State in 2013, he played in 11 games. Hansen caught 45 passes for 501 yards and three touchdown passes. He had a season-high four receptions for 138 yards and one touchdown vs. Eastern Washington. Also, he had an 80-yard touchdown reception vs. Eastern Washington. Hansen had four receptions for an Idaho State career-high 138 yards receiving vs. Portland State including a career-long 80-yard touchdown reception, while he had an Idaho State career-best eight catches for 54 yards receiving vs.

University of California, Berkeley (2015-2016)

After sitting out 2014, due to transfer rules, Hansen had 19 receptions for 249 yards and a touchdown over 10 games for the Golden Bears in 2015. Hansen combined for 111 receptions and 1,498 receiving yards with 12 touchdown catches over 20 games and nine starts at Cal after redshirting the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Hansen racked up some of the top receiving numbers in the nation during a breakout 2016 junior season and was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection by Associated Press, Athlon Sports, ESPN.com and Phil Steele, as well as a second-team All-Pac-12 pick of the league's coaches. Hansen ranked third in the country as a junior in per-game receptions (9.2) and fourth in receiving yards (124.9), while he was also 12th nationally in total receptions (92), 17th in receiving yards (1,249) and tied for 22nd in touchdown receptions (11) despite missing two contests due to injury and finishing with 10 games played and nine starts. In addition, Hansen led the Pac-12 in both per-game and total receptions and receiving yards while he was fourth in the conference in touchdown catches. His total receptions and receiving yards both also rank third on Cal’s all-time single-season list.

Hansen exploded onto the national scene early in the 2016 campaign and earned midseason All-American honors from ESPN and Sports Illustrated as well as ESPN midseason All-Pac-12 recognition. He was also added to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award during the season and captured the Berkeley Breakfast Club Award as Cal’s most outstanding player in the Big Game against Stanford.

Professional Career

Hansen declared for the 2017 NFL Draft after his junior season. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Throughout his professional career, Hansen played for several NFL teams, including the New York Jets, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans. On March 8, 2023, Hansen signed with the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL.
