The Genesis of Benoni
The origins of Benoni date back to 1881, when Johan Rissik, the surveyor-general, encountered difficulties in assigning title deeds to unclaimed state property. In September 1887, the discovery of gold led to the establishment of the Chimes Mine by Cornishmen. This marked the beginning of Benoni's journey as a mining camp.
