The Chad Johnson Controversy: A Deep Dive into the Scandals of a Reality TV Villain

Brian Chad Johnson, born on August 11, 1987, is an American reality television personality who has been embroiled in numerous controversies throughout his career. From his time on The Bachelorette to his arrests and subsequent career changes, Johnson has consistently found himself in the spotlight for both good and bad reasons.

Early Reality TV Appearances

In 2016, Johnson appeared on season 12 of The Bachelorette, vying for JoJo Fletcher's affections. While on The Bachelorette, he was known as the season’s villain, earning the nickname, "Bad Chad," and threatening to cut off fellow contestants’ arms and legs during one episode. In the summer of 2016, Johnson joined season three of The Bachelor spin-off show, Bachelor in Paradise.

On Monday night’s premiere of the franchise’s spinoff series - which ships past fan favorites off to Mexico in hopes that they shack up and find love - Chad lived up to his villainous reputation when his intoxicated and abusive behavior got him kicked off the show. He drunkenly ridiculed the 29-year-old, who is returning for her second time in a row to Paradise, telling her to “suck a dick” and calling her a “one-armed bitch,” among other mocking rhetoric. Some of his worst offenses were calling Lace Morris (from Ben Higgins’ season of The Bachelor) a “f-ing bitch,” telling the hotel bartenders to “suck a dick” and threatening to “murder everyone here.” Adding, “I’ll kill your children and murder your family.

Host Chris Harrison ultimately intervened and found himself in an altercation with Chad after he gathered the contestants the morning after to announce that Chad was being kicked off the show. “You went to sleep last night with a mimosa and a robe on,” Chad yelled at the host, a quote that was quickly picked up on social media. As The Hollywood Reporter previously reported, Chad apologized to Harrison when the pair reunited during The Bachelorette: Men Tell All taping.

In 2017, Johnson was cast as a member of season 2 of the E! network reality television show Famously Single. Johnson also laughed off speculation that he used steroids to bulk up his body. “No, not at all,” he told Cohen. “Before I went on the show I counted every calorie, I did every single thing you could possibly do. I went into it the same way a body-builder would go into a body-building competition. Every single thing was measured and weighed, and I figured what can you do coming into a show to help your chances to meet a girl?

He’s since wrapped a stint on Bachelor in Paradise, which premieres in August, and caused controversy online by posting an Instagram of himself kissing Hope Higginbotham, the ex of another of JoJo Fletcher‘s suitors, Robby Hayes. “I think my main goal with that was to show that you’ve got all these guys going on the show, they’re acting so nice and like they’re such good guys. At the end of the day, it’s like half these guys are cheating on their girlfriends. Half of them broke up with girlfriends to go on the show. Now how can they be such good guys?” he said.

As for the biggest misconception about him, Johnson said, “People think I’m just this violent, crazy person who hurts women or something like that, and the thing is, it’s a competition. If you put me in the middle of a competition with a bunch of guys all going for one thing, I’m gonna do what I have to do. I treat my women very well. That’s my thing. Yeah, I’m willing to do what I got to do to get what I want when it comes to competitions, but I am very nice to my girls.

Arrest and Domestic Violence Allegations

Two days after authorities responded to an alleged altercation between Chad Johnson and his ex-girlfriend Annalise Mishler, Johnson was arrested for robbery with domestic violence enhancement following an alleged altercation with Mishler at her home in Los Angeles. According to Mishler's legal team, authorities were called to the residence after a neighbor reported seeing Johnson banging on Mishler's door and screaming profanities.

Before the police became involved in the matter, Mishler claimed in a video posted on social media Sunday night that Johnson got drunk and punched holes in her wall. In the video, reshared by TMZ, a man can be heard saying “I hope you fucking die” after Mishler refuses to let him into her apartment. "I'm super sorry to any girl that has seen my girlfriend's story; to any girl that has watched that and felt that emotion that triggers all these bad emotions to people, of the bad things that they've had happen," he told TooFab. "I am sorry. I never meant to make anybody think all of these things. I'm just sorry for my actions."

Mishler claimed she tried to call the police herself, but was unable to do so as Johnson allegedly took and threw her phone, per the outlet. When the police showed up Monday, Mishler reportedly informed them that Johnson was at her home the night before, and that he "sort of backhanded her right eye" on Sunday and "also had her sweatshirt twisted in his hand, lifting her off the ground outside of his apartment, so as not to let her walk home to her own unit,” according to Mishler’s legal representative. Johnson was reportedly served with a temporary restraining order. Per E! She said that she didn't personally file a restraining order.

Johnson claimed that after he and Mishler broke up on Monday, he drank alcohol for the first time in two months. "I made a promise to myself and my girlfriend that I wouldn't do that anymore, and as most of you know, that has been an issue in my life. The reality TV personality claimed that after he and Mishler broke up on Monday, he drank alcohol for the first time in two months.

Johnson then claimed he went to Mishler's apartment, which is located in the same complex as his apartment, where they got into a fight after she discovered he drank alcohol and downloaded a dating app. "The next day," Johnson said, "I came over to try and talk things out. I saw she posted the videos. I wasn't mad at her. I totally understand why she did that. I still love her very much. He claimed that Mishler started recording him.

As Johnson described, "I was very down at the time and I was very upset and I just didn't want to be recorded. I made a stupid decision and I just grabbed her phone and I just threw it. I threw it outside. Once I went back over to her place to apologize, I was knocking on the door there. That is when one of the neighbors apparently called the police."

Johnson continued, "There was never any domestic abuse of any kind, I have never laid hands on a woman any time in my entire life. I was in the Marine Corps and was taught core values. I have a sister. I am a very overprotective brother. If she ever felt in danger, I would want her to call. His video message concluded, "I can totally understand why Annalise felt threatened when I took her phone but I am 100 percent confident any domestic abuse charges are going to be dropped. There was never any type of domestic abuse at all whatsoever. I have never laid my hands on a woman. I am sorry for the entire situation. I am sorry for anyone who had to see it, who has been triggered by this. I am so sorry to Annalise who has been threatened. I am working on myself to get better. That is all I can do is put my best foot forward and try to be a better person, every day from here on out and make less mistakes in life. I hope that everyone out there cannot be so quick to take judgement."

Johnson said Mishler told the police he'd thrown her phone, "So that was the robbery issue."

He noted that, despite his relapse, he and Mishler got back together. In between falling off the wagon and getting back together, Johnson said he started a dating app profile, which is what led to the couple’s next fight.

“There was never any domestic abuse of any kind. I have never laid hands on a woman anytime in my entire life,” the Bachelor Nation star said. “I was in the Marine core; I was taught core values. I have a sister. I am a very overprotective brother. He continued: “If any women out there ever feel like they are in any danger I urge you to call 911. I can totally understand why Annalise felt threatened whenever I took her phone, but I am 100 percent confident [that] any type of domestic abuse charges are going to be dropped, because there was never any time of domestic abuse at all whatsoever.

Chad Johnson is speaking out, setting the record straight and apologizing for the series of events that led up to his arrest. The reality star noted on Wednesday in his video message that the “robbery” charges came because he technically stole her phone and threw it.

In August 2020, Johnson reached a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded "no contest" to one count of vandalism and one count of intimidating a witness.
