In the realm of unique travel experiences, African-themed hotels stand out by offering a rich blend of modern luxury and authentic cultural immersion. These hotels not only provide a place to stay but also serve as a gateway to the vibrant traditions, art, and flavors of Africa.
One such gem is the Tribe Hotel in Nairobi, a member of Design Hotels, which exemplifies African excellence and pride. Founded in 2008 by Shamim Ehsani and his brother Hooman Ehsani, this five-star property is dedicated to making Nairobi a travel destination in its own right.
Nairobi, Kenya
A Fusion of Art, Culture, and Modernity
The Tribe Hotel stands out with its keen emphasis on modern African art, offering a completely different experience from the 'Out of Africa' approach so often encountered in Kenya and other countries. It has a much more contemporary feel, not least due to its location in the grounds of a large, very fun, and vibrant shopping center. The center is a real locals’ hangout, making Tribe a great fit with travelers who want to be within easy reach of laidback restaurants and high-quality shops.
With 128 guestrooms and a 10,000-square-foot spa, the hotel honors African and Kenya’s traditions and culture through its design, acclaimed food and beverage offerings such as Jiko Restaurant and its definitive collection of 900 African artworks and artifacts curated by Shamim's mother, Faranak Ehsani. Shamim's father, Hamed Ehsani, sits on the hotel's Board of Directors, and his uncle, Mehraz Ehsani, was the hotel's architect.

The Village Market: A Hub of Activity
The hotel is strategically located within easy reach of the Village Market, one of East Africa's largest shopping, recreation, and entertainment destinations. This complex embodies the spirit of the African market in an open-air setting, complete with waterfalls, rivers, and over 2000 exotic plants and gardens. The Village Market includes a Nu Metro Cinema, where you can take a break from shopping to enjoy a good film, as well as a thrilling waterpark.
Culinary Delights and Unique Experiences
The flavors of Africa come alive at Jiko Restaurant in the Tribe Hotel, which reprises the flavors of the African continent with authentic ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is the first five-star hotel in Africa to celebrate indigenous cuisines.
For a memorable outing, Nairobi National Park offers visitors an opportunity to view lions, cheetahs, leopards, baboons, rhinoceroses, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, impalas, jackals, hyenas, crocodiles and other wildlife. At the park’s Giraffe Center, visitors can feed giraffes by hand.

Rooms and Amenities
Guest accommodation consists of 137 rooms and suites, across seven categories. Every category is furnished with modern artworks, and the glass walls separating the washing facilities from the bedrooms lend a very open-plan feel. The communal facilities at Tribe are also adorned with plenty of contemporary art, not least the corridors and corners linking the main areas! The hotel’s stylish atrium offers a very open space in which to relax, with its clean-lined sofas and tables and intriguing light installations. There’s a separate TV & audio room too.
Keep-fit fans can get a good workout in Tribe’s well-equipped gym, while anyone in need of a little pampering can head to Kaya Spa for massages, skin specials, and hot-tub bliss.
Kalahari Resort: An African Oasis in Texas
Similarly, the Kalahari Resort & Convention in Texas has created a world-class African-themed resort for its guests. This project showcases African design elements, including a modern Baobab Tree, bamboo cladding on concrete pillars, and wide weave bamboo board used as a ceiling treatment.
Kalahari Resort, Texas
Rustic Eucalyptus Fencing surrounds the pool area, completing the authentic tribal feel of the resort. The designer on the project wanted to showcase an African Boabab Tree, but with a modern twist. After many months of hand crafting the Designer’s impression of a modern Baobab Tree, amaZulu finally shipped the tree in multiple parts from our factory overseas to the Kalahari Resort in Texas.
