Understanding African Traditional Religion (ATR)
African traditional religions (ATRs) do not contain an overall scheme of universal cosmic soteriology, or salvation. Instead, what is found is an assortment of rituals and beliefs that focus on the appropriate relationships and actions between the living, the dead, and nature. This study explores the concept of salvation within ATRs. The areas of emphasis here are on what salvation is, what it is for and from, the actions required for salvation, as well as other areas of interest in ATRs.
This paper examines the evolution, core tenets, and contemporary relevance of African traditional religions (ATRs). It highlights the interplay between ATRs and other religious traditions, analyzes their adaptation to modernity, and underscores their enduring socio-cultural significance. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the study draws from historical texts, oral traditions, and ethnographic studies to offer a nuanced understanding of ATRs.

This paper will also examine the philosophy and the contribution of traditional religion in fostering co-existence among the African people and how this religion also acted as an agency in deterring colonial rule. Then I will also show aspects that have challenged this religion hence it’s gaining of a negative definition in the modern times.
In this chapter, I differentiate the key terms in the study of African religions by returning to the well-established label of 'African Traditional Religion.' I historicize African Traditional Religion as a concept with a specific understanding of African religions that emerged in Anglophone West Africa in response to the historical confluences of the time.
There has been a divergent view regarding the concept and philosophy of African Traditional Religion. Some have seen Africans as not having the capacity to reason on the concept or the philosophy of God. This led them into giving all forms of derogatory names to African Traditional Religion.
This paper examines the concept and philosophy of African Traditional Religion from the viewpoint of Africans. It presents the worldview, philosophical nature and foundation of African Traditional Religion. It also shows that the worship of God in African Traditional Religion is through sacrifices, offerings, singing, dancing and prayers.
The paper also considers the concept of evil, ethics, justice and time in African Traditional Religion. It concludes that Africans knew God before the coming of the missionaries to Africa.

The Role of Oral Tradition in African Spirituality
Research in African Traditional Religion, unlike other religions of the world is mostly based or relies on oral sources. African Traditional Religion being a religion of memory is passed from one generation to another, and continues to explore the instrumentality of oral sources like; myths, idioms, proverbs, names, riddles, legends, daily speeches (pith sayings), prayers, invocations, blessings, curses, oaths, spells, folklores.
Comparatively, other world religions like; Islamic religion and Christianity have compiled sacred books. According to Metuh (1987:25) "there are no sacred scriptures which are regarded as repertoires of authentic beliefs and practices of African Religion.
In this study, the research will focus on the five oral sources of data collection which includes; oral histories, oral literature, oral performances, oral teachings, oral testimonies, oral codes and laws. Oral history is a method of conducting historical research through recorded interviews between a narrator with personal experience of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of adding to the historical record ().
