The African Leadership Group: Shaping Ethical and Entrepreneurial Leaders for Africa

The African Leadership Group (ALG) is dedicated to cultivating ethical, entrepreneurial African leaders. Fred Swaniker, a Ghanaian serial entrepreneur and leadership development expert, is at the helm of this transformative initiative.

Fred is deeply passionate about Africa and believes the missing ingredient on the continent is good leadership. In line with this, he has co-founded four organizations that aim to catalyze a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial African leaders: ALA, ALN, ALU and ALX. Collectively, these institutions aim to groom 3 million leaders for Africa over a 50-year period.

Swaniker recognized the importance of leadership and education while serving as the headmaster of a secondary school founded by his mother at the age of 17. He believed that effective leadership was a key factor needed to drive transformation in Africa.

Here's a look at the timeline of the African Leadership Group's development:

Swaniker also sits on the board of the Rhodes Trust (awardees of the Rhodes Scholarships to Oxford University), and on the international advisory board of the University of Waterloo.

Among his accomplishments is Fred’s recognition as a TED Fellow, an Aspen Institute Fellow, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, an Echoing Green Fellow, one of Africa’s top 10 young “power men” by Forbes, and one of 115 young leaders selected to meet President Obama at the White House. More recently, Fred was nominated to the TIME 100 list of most influential people 2019.

Fred has an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar, a distinction awarded to the top 10% of each graduating class. He holds a BA in Economics with a minor in Mathematical Statistics from Macalester College (magna cum laude).

In the years that followed, the ALA led to the founding of the African Leadership Network, the ALU and now our new leadership accelerator, ALX.

The African Leadership Academy (ALA)

Founded in 2004 by Fred Swaniker, Chris Bradford, Peter Mombaur, and Acha Leke, ALA officially opened in September 2008 with an inaugural class of 97 students. ALA seeks to transform Africa by identifying, developing, and connecting the next generation of African leaders.

In 2006, Swaniker and Bradford were recognized by Echoing Green, who described them as two of the 15 best emerging social entrepreneurs in the world.

The African Leadership Academy uses four criteria for admitting students annually. ALA's primary entrepreneurial leadership curriculum is a cornerstone of the student experience that creates opportunities to practice leadership and entrepreneurship skills through simulation and project-based learning. Students are encouraged to work on team building and original thinking.

Inaugural Dean Christopher Situma Khaemba was previously Principal of Alliance High School on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Students are encouraged to participate in a fitness activity.

Original Ideas for Development (OIDs) are projects that have a wide scope and run beyond the students' time at ALA.

ALA also hosts several programs, including:

  • Global Scholars Program: A three-week, global leadership summer program for teens aged 13-19. A study abroad experience for secondary students from around the world to develop as social innovators.
  • Model African Union (MAU): A four-day conference where participants from secondary schools around the world debate and discuss some of the most complicated issues on the continent.

African Leadership University (ALU)

ALU is an undergraduate and postgraduate institution that uses a unique and innovative learning model that integrates students’ learning with the real world, empowers students to take ownership of their own learning, ALU has two campuses-one in Mauritius and one in Rwanda.

When they started the ALU, from the beginning their plan was to do something disruptive, unconventional, innovative and large scale. They wanted to develop three million leaders in 6,000 days and become financially sustainable.

As NECHE president (especially with our newly established national portfolio and rapidly growing global footprint), I’ve witnessed even more extraordinary men and women helping to lead this transformation.

The laws governing higher education in Mauritius require any new college to affiliate with an existing university for at least a decade before it can award degrees, so for the past eight years, ALC has affiliated with Glasgow Caledonian University; its accreditation comes from both Scotland and Mauritius.

ALX Africa

ALX offers job-ready training in the tech fields with programs designed to be responsive and agile, training learners in skills that will remain future-proof.

ALX is the training arm of ALI that focuses on developing skills for the fourth industrial revolution such as software engineering, devops, and data science, among others. Our partnership with Mastercard Foundation allows us to offer eligible candidates access to world-class programme training at no cost. Each candidate has the opportunity to apply for a sponsored placement during the application process.

Before that, Julien was the CEO and founder of Holberton, a revolutionary new type of software engineering school that has no teachers, no lectures, and no upfront tuition. With 15 years of experience in the industry, Guillaume is the CTO of Holberton School, creator of the Checker and all other tools that he and his team developed for allowing learners to learn “the Holberton way”. Passionate about education and mainly to see a learner grow month after month.

Over time, this collective of AL institutions, programs, and products will transform a generation of young Africans into ethical and entrepreneurial leaders who can solve the complex challenges facing the continent. By shaping millions of these world changers, we can unlock investments to new businesses and social ventures, develop a culture of leadership and accountability, and create a better quality of life for generations to come.

The AL Group isn’t just focused on reimagining education, we are unleashing a movement: millions of leaders that will spread across Africa and the World with an ironclad entrepreneurial skill set to solve the most pressing problems.
