Africa Through the Lens: A Photographic Journey

The photos in this book represent the culmination of countless safaris across some of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes. These images capture moments of awe and wonder, moments where nature’s raw beauty meets the lens.

Taken in Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Uganda, and Kenya, this collection traverses Africa’s most evocative regions, from the spice-scented alleys of Zanzibar to the vivid markets of Marrakech and the vast serenity of safari plains.

Botswana

For years, I’ve been fortunate to explore the wilds of Africa, forming connections with the incredible guides who dedicate their lives to preserving and sharing this natural world with travelers. Among them, one guide has become like a son to me: Vianney Jacob Kabwine. Not only is Vianney a master guide, but he’s also an exceptional photographer.

Putting this book together has been a labor of love, and it is my sincere hope that these photos inspire you to not only enjoy the stunning animals featured but also to share them with your family and friends. By showcasing Africa’s unique wildlife, I aim to instill a sense of wonder and appreciation for these creatures.

Celebrating African Art and Culture

Africa’s artistic heritage is as vast as its geography-sculpture, textile, and ceremonial form infused with deep symbolic meaning. These books honor the creators, cultures, and customs that have shaped African visual language across centuries.

Curating a Collection: Themes to Explore

Confession: I have a major weakness for coffee table books. And not just the ones with pretty, aesthetic covers. As I continue to curate my home, it was important to really take time to research before building a collection. I want to be able to actively read, thumb through, and be inspired by my coffee table books beyond their outer appearance.

So to start, I’ve focused on a few themes:

  • Vintage photography by African greats like Malick Sidibé, Sory Sanlé, and Seydou Keïta
  • African Art history across several themes from various tribes and countries
  • Interior design books celebrating African, Japanese, and Italian styles
  • Modern photography celebrating black beauty and aesthetics

As time goes on, I’m hoping to get more that cover African recipes, and children’s fairytales. There’s something about seeing these celebrations of art and beauty stacked in my living room that brings me so much joy. If you’d also like to get inspired, more cultured, and more enriched by some new coffee table books, keep scrolling to get my current list.

The Role of Tourism in Conservation

For those who have never experienced an African safari, I encourage you to do so. Tourism plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, helping to ensure that future generations can marvel at the same majestic animals. Through photography, we can transport others into the wild, and through responsible travel, we can contribute to its protection.
