The Garden Route, known for its lush green pastures and dynamic views are also home to fantastic wine farms. The weather creates a perfect atmosphere for the cultivation of wine. These wine farms are in close proximity of each other and will make a perfect day’s outing!

Here are some wine farms you should visit:

Newstead Lund Family Vineyards

Location: Off the N2, approximately 17km NE of Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route, South Africa

Known for: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.

Why you should visit: Inspired by their visit to New Zealand, the Lund family decided to develop their own wine farm in this area. It is a small but charming vineyard. They focus more on the quality of each vine rather than quantity, and you will find them meticulously tending to the vineyard.
By using organic fertilisers and recycled grey water, the wine-making processes are completely environmentally friendly.

Anton Smal, a renowned winemaker, is in charge of the winery. Expect only the finest wines!

Bramon Wine Estate

Location: N2 The Crags, 20km East of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

Known for: Award-winning, non-traditional and traditional Methode Cap Classique bubblies and still wines.

Why you should visit: Owner Peter Thorpe grew up on a wine farm and therefore had the passion for wine-making instilled in him from a young age.

With his many years of experience, he pushes the boundaries of wine-making by creating award-winning wines. You can enjoy the wines at the Tasting Centre or the restaurant. They serve delicious bread and other eats along with the wines. Anton Smal is once again, overseeing the wine-making process on this farm.

The ambience of this estate, overlooking the Tsitsikamma mountains and the Elephant Sanctuary, makes wine tasting on this estate extra special.

Plettenvale Wine Estate

Location: Off the N2, Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route, South Africa

Known for: High-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.

Why you should visit: Declared part of the new “Wine of Origin”, some of the best wines are cultivated on this estate due to weather conditions and attention to detail.

If you want to experience wine-making first-hand, from harvesting to the barrel, this is the estate to visit. The self-catering cottages offers the perfect setting for a ‘wine getaway’. This hands-on family will make you feel right at home!

Jakkalsvlei Vineyard

Location: Garden Route, 50km from Mossel Bay on the R327

Known for: Wines of rare depth, longevity and elegance.

Why you should visit: This farm is in existence since 1972, which guarantees high quality of wines. The vineyard is extremely unique with breath-taking views of the farm and the mountains, and benefits from the warm days and cool nights due to its location.

They offer a “create your own” cheese platters and pizzas, which makes it a fun adventure for family and friends!
