Location and Cultural Experience

There is no better place for UNE to be than in the world-renowned Moroccan city of Tangier. Morocco is in one of the hottest up-and-coming study abroad destinations, and UNE's Tangier campus is ideally located within easy access to the city’s downtown, beach and cultural activities. This glimmering "white city" has been home to an international contingent of painters and writers and is now one of the major economic and cultural hubs of the region.

You will also have access to fabulous Moroccan cities like Casablanca and Marrakesh, as well as natural wonders such as the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert. Spain is right across the Strait of Gibraltar - only 40 minutes away by high-speed ferry! From there, students can explore the rest of Europe by bus, rail or one of many budget airlines.

Living on the UNE campus allowed me to make life long friends, explore Tangier, and also experience different cities and countries during excursions included with the program. During my semester, I visited 5 different moroccan cities and traveled to Spain as excursions included with the cost, and was able to plan my own trips to different countries during the weekends and over breaks.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

All external students applying to the program will automatically be reviewed for merit-based scholarships. Scholarships are only available for semester-length programs.

Student Experiences

Going to Tangier was the best decision of my life. It brought me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to meet people I never would have otherwise. The group excursions to Rabat, Marrakesh, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, and Sevilla only brought our group closer and enhanced our cultural experience. However, staying right in Tangier was an adventure in itself. There were always people to see, cafes and views to enjoy, or local events going on in the city (the soccer games are awesome!). Don't hesitate to apply and take advantage of this amazing program.

I learned more than I can put into words. I learned how to understand without speaking, to understand the deeper meaning and to understand from a different perspective. Learning was something that happened both inside and outside of the classroom.

Even now, I still benefit from participating in this program. Having been abroad for 4 months, I feel much more comfortable traveling and interacting in new places.

Additional Global Education Programs

UNE's Global Education Program offers a range of short-term travel courses to destinations such as Belize, the Azores, Panama, Kenya, and Brazil.

  • Akureyri, Iceland: Explore Iceland at the University of Akureyri.

Short-Term Travel Courses

Imagine earning credits by snorkeling among coral reefs, climbing a glacier, or touring health care facilities overseas. UNE students study abroad at nearly five times the national average, spending a semester at our Morocco Campus or with partner universities in Europe for about the same cost as a semester in Maine.

Here are some examples of short-term travel courses:

  • The Azores, Portugal: In this spring semester course, you will travel in late May to São Miguel Island in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. In addition to hiking and exploring the natural wonders of São Miguel’s geothermal pools, colorful lakes, and verdant forest sanctuaries, you will tour sports facilities and meet female athletes who play basketball, surf, and contribute to the culture of sport on the archipelago. Other activities include meeting with local university students and learning about the agricultural and culinary traditions of this vibrant Atlantic island group.
  • Belize: This fall semester course presents an in-depth study of the biology and taxonomy of corals while examining the ecology of the coral reef system and the future of reefs, concluding with a field lab. You will snorkel in the beautiful lagoons of Ambergris Caye, the Hol Chan and Bacalar Chico Marine Reserves.
  • Costa Rica: This is a spring semester course that includes travel to Costa Rica for nine days over spring break, where you will explore the amazing biodiversity of both tropical rainforests and so-called dry forests. Students will conduct fieldwork examining how human-induced changes in the environment - such as defaunation, invasive species, and global warming - impact these two forest types. In addition, students will have the opportunity to zipline through the forest canopy, spend some time at the beach, and simply enjoy the sights and sounds of tropical forests.
  • Copenhagen, Denmark: Travel to Denmark to explore how business can be a force for positive impact through change leadership. This undergraduate course will include both theory and practical case work and focuses on the power of change and continuous improvement leadership now taking shape in Copenhagen.
  • Iceland: This spring semester course provides an in-depth study of the unique ecosystems for marine and terrestrial organisms, as well as the unique human history and culture of Iceland. You will explore geological features like volcanic craters and geysers, hike in the fault line between the American and the European plate and learn about adaptations to a subarctic climate.
  • Iceland Arctic Adventure Tourism: Tourism is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in the world, thus the demand for proficient workers is increasing continuously. In its 2017 Global Economic Impact Report, the World Travel and Tourism Council reported that, "Over the next 10 years, the sector will support 23% of new jobs created." This course will focus on Arctic marketing, management and communication relevant to the adventure tourism industry. You will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to design and produce sustainable nature-and culture based experiences. The program's values are based on respect and concern for nature and culture. This course has a travel component which includes travel to Iceland in May where you will participate in activities related to Arctic adventure tourism and meet with local business owners in this field.
  • Morocco: This spring semester course introduces students to the field of futures studies and strategic foresight. You will use these frameworks in real-world contexts spanning business strategy, public policy, environmental planning, and global challenges. In Tangier, you will participate in site visits, workshops, and applied foresight activities. Other highlights include sightseeing tours, cultural excursions to Asilah, Chefchouen and Tetouan, a cooking class, a camel ride, and more. The group will stay at the on-campus residence hall.
  • Panama: This spring semester course covers topics in history and geology of the Caribbean with an emphasis on the island of Bocas del Toro in Panama. You will study topics such as terrestrial, island, and marine biodiversity, and the ecology and evolution of populations. You will explore both Panama City and the Bocas del Toro, where you will stay at a field station for the Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation.
